Since the launch of JPSOโ€™s Drone as First Responder (DFR) program, this technology has successfully assisted in numerous investigations. The DFR program has helped track suspects, locate stolen vehicles, and provide real-time information to responding patrol units throughout Jefferson Parish.

This past weekend was just one example of how quickly the DFR program can make an impact.

At approximately 4:30 a.m. on May 17, 2026, deputies received a report of a stolen vehicle in Terrytown involving multiple masked suspects. Before deputies even arrived to take the initial report, a DFR operator had already launched a drone and located the stolen vehicle within minutes of the 911 call.

As suspects attempted to flee through a Harvey neighborhood, DFR operators tracked their movements in real time while providing live updates to responding deputies and officers on the ground.

During the incident, the stolen vehicle intentionally rammed a marked patrol unit before the driver abandoned the vehicle and fled on foot into Gretna. DFR operators continued tracking the suspect through multiple neighborhoods as deputies coordinated their response.

With the assistance of DFR and coordinated ground units, deputies and officers successfully boxed in and apprehended the suspect behind a local business.

This incident highlights the effectiveness of JPSOโ€™s Drone as First Responder program in enhancing deputy safety, improving suspect tracking, and assisting in the quick apprehension of offenders.
