Hwy 53 and Harvest Road update, I received a phone call from Rogers Group that the paving for the new turn lane project is complete. Glad to have this step of the turn lane project done. Just a few minor details to finish up and it will be 100% done. It should be ready for the afternoon traffic.

Dist 4 cost update.
Over the years I have at times given you cost of projects so you can have an understanding of where your taxes are going. In the last few weeks we have started repaving some of our roads with more to come. The cost of these projects just seem to keeep going up. We repaved Grimwood Road and the cost per 2 lane mile was $88,000 a mile. Also we repaved Fords Chapel and the cost was $92,000 a mile. So the total of just those two projects was $418,000.
For those who like numbers. District Four is responsible for maintenance on 488 miles of road. That is about a 1/3 of the total for Madison County which has 1446 miles of road in the unincorporated area as of 2023. To repave all of roads that are our responsibility in District Four at today’s price we would need over 41 million dollars. This price has gone up about a third since I have taken office. Just passing these along for your information.

4am District 4 road report.
It’s 29 degrees and moderately snowing. Roads must have warmed up yesterday enough to melt the snow for right now. Every where there is a culvert or bridge where the cold air can get under the road it’s already frozen. For the most part here at 4am you can go down the road without any issues. At these temps it won’t take long before the roads start to get cold enough for the snow to stick. Now to find somewhere to get a Dr Pepper and a candy bar. We will update as conditions change.

My family was able to go to Walk Ons today for lunch. The food was really good and it would be a fun place to catch a game on all of their TVs. Stop by and give them a try.

District 4 has lost phone lines and that includes or internet. I believe a construction issue around Jeff Road has caused our issues. If you need us for an emergency please call 256-532-3492 which is the courthouse and they can get in touch with us. Sorry for the inconvenience.

A big Thank You to Huntsville Utilities and the Madison County Traffic Engineers, Shawn, Daniel and Jose for working hard on a late Friday afternoon to get the traffic light back up at Harvest Road and Hwy 53. The easy way would have been to stick 2 stop signs up and go home. However Huntsville Utilities and our traffic engineers were willing to work hard on a cold and windy day to make the road safer. Great job everyone.

Dist 4.Harvest Road and Hwy 53.
When it rains it pours. Pickup truck knocked down pole holding up traffic light. Not sure what the plan is for now. Replace pole today or make Harvest Road have stop signs. Just be careful as you use the intersection

District 4 6:15 Wednesday Road Update.
It feels like Groundhog Day day 3. On the way to the office not much has changed since yesterday. Maybe just a little slicker. If you need to get on the road leave early and dont drive fast. Give yourself plenty of room to stop. When conditions allow we’re ready to go.

6:00am District 4 Road Report.
Traveling to the office this morning the roads are a mixture of sleet, ice and snow. Looks like about 2-3 inches of the mixture. This has formed in a hard layer. It’s rough and not slick so you can get traction on it. I haven’t had to use the 4 wheel drive during all of this event. It took a while to clean off the windshield of my truck that was parked outside. I would stay home if possible. If you have to get out and drive stay at a speed you can control the vehicle. There will be more traffic today than yesterday. I don’t know if that is good or bad. Hopefully we will get some sunshine and start thawing out.

5:05am District 4 north end report.
Things are completely different once you cross about McKee Road headed north. I saw one car that had slide through the intersection of Jeff and Toney. This must have come down with some ice in it because it’s very slick in many places. Once cars get out I think the brine will mix with the ice and melt. But it’s very slick for now. If you’re not completely comfortable driving on ice stay home.
