DID YOU KNOW?
There is VERY exciting news for the Harvard Council on Aging (COA)!
The Permanent Building Committee (PBC) has selected a building for the new Harvard Senior Center.
The new site for the Harvard Senior Center is the 5,400 sq. ft. former medical building at 16 Lancaster County Road, conveniently located near the Post Office, Foxglove, Bowers Brook, Harvard Green, and the McCurdy Track.
Why a new building?
The Hildreth House is no longer a viable option. Architectural firm DAI will design the renovation of the building to create a space which reflects and supports the core vision of the COA. It is a building which will allow “ongoing social, recreational, and educational” programming for residents age 60 and above,
providing ample space required for the COA’s large groups.
Commitment to Community:
In addition to COA specific programming, the building design will enable community use for events, as well as, serve as a warming or cooling station or shelter during extreme weather events.
Numbers:
The capital request is for the purchase price of the building, approximately $1.425 million, with renovation costs undetermined, but the whole amount will be significantly less than the previous request of $4.3 million in 2019.
Vote: A vote to approve MUST pass on:
OCTOBER 16 (Town Meeting: Noon on the Library Field)
AND NOVEMBER 2 (Election ballot)
Please VOTE YES!!
Questions?
Informational meetings to be announced soon.

Harvard's Second First Night
A benefit for the Harvard Council on Aging.
Artist profile: Bare Hill

"Celebrating 10 Years of Rock and Roll

Bare Hill was formed just over 10 years ago and first performed in the summer of 2008. The sole intent of the original members of the band was to have and to rekindle an interest in the stylings and messages of the music of the 60's and 70's. We also sought out the works of contemporary musicians who sustained the feel and vibe of this music.

The musical roots of the band are both deep and broad, extending back to the sounds of the 60's and 70's and drawing from psychedelic rock to early new wave rock to underground club rock. However, the common threads that define Bare Hill are our two, three and four-part harmonies, our instrumental diversity, including harp, ukulele, guitars, accordion, keyboards and percussion, and our rootedness in the folk-rock sound.

We generally enjoy smaller venues where the audience is part of the show. We also enjoy giving back to the Community and, in particular, to the individuals who have given so much to us, by performing Town Concerts, Fundraisers and Special Events.

Bare Hill are Don Sugai, Andy Bollman, Joel Skoletsky, Johnny Murzycki, Ted Noyes."

Harvard's "2nd First Night": A Dazzling Local New Year's Celebration Returns!

The countdown is on! Join the history makers ringing in 2019 at Harvard's acclaimed "2nd First Night" New Year's Eve soiree celebrating community, caring, and all things local to benefit the Friends of the Council on Aging. Returning after a sold out first year, "2nd First Night" promises to be a sensational evening of socializing, music and dancing to be held on Monday, December 31, 2018, from 8 PM to 12:30 AM at Fellowship Hall, 7 Elm Street, Harvard, MA.

Headlining this dazzling 2.0 version of the event is Harvard's beloved Bare Hill Band, entertaining all with their timeless rock, rhythm and soul dance music spanning the generations. The evening will feature delicious savory and sweet passed hors d'oeuvres and an abundant buffet of delectables all night long. It is a BYOB event.

Young and old alike, guests can expect a memorable evening for their listening, dancing or socializing pleasure. Building on 2018's enormously successful "First, First Night", memories will be made with neighbors and friends in the annals of Harvard's history as the clocks tick down to midnight. Rich with local good cheer and good will, come celebrate community and raise a toast to peace and prosperity in support of Harvard's cherished seniors who have made, and continue to make, Harvard the very special place it is.

Sponsors and community groups are invited to participate in this festive tradition as well. Organizations are encouraged to host daytime activities on the Common for sledding, snow sculpting, crafts, or creativity, to sponsor babysitting for attendees with young children, or arrange a 'tween movie night to make New Year's a town wide family affair. Business, sponsor and donation opportunities are also available for "2nd First Night" at all levels to support FCOA outreach.

Event organizers Pat Cooper and Heidi Siegrist explain " '2nd First Night' is now a community tradition. Let's celebrate the transformative power of caring and commitment in Harvard as we begin a new year thanking and celebrating Harvard's seniors. They have given so much to enrich our lives and our town. It's time to get the party started for 2019 in their honor once again! "

Tickets to the event are $50 a person and are available at https://firstnightharvard.tix.com/

Donations may also be made there by clicking through to ticket purchase.

Tickets are limited and will be sold on a "first come, first served" basis. More information is found on the Friends’ page - https://www.facebook.com/pg/FHCOA/events/ or by contacting Co-Chair Heidi Siegrist at [email protected]
