My grandmother kept a folded quilt on the shelf of the hall closet and nobody was allowed to use it. That was the storm quilt. When the sky went green and the wind started to howl, everyone went into that closet and the quilt went over the kids. Nobody explained why. You just went.

The folks at the weather service still draw the same picture today: a small room in the middle of the house, lowest floor, no windows, as many walls as you can put between yourself and the weather. The old-timers had it right.

Ever wonder how the old farmers knew when to head in without a watch? They held up a hand.

Stretch your arm straight out toward the sun, turn your hand flat, fingers together, and rest the bottom finger on the horizon. Every finger between the horizon and the sun is about fifteen minutes. Four fingers, an hour.

It is not perfect. Your arm, your fingers, and how far north you live all have a say. But try it this evening and check it against the clock, and you may be surprised how close the old trick gets.

Wasps?! Mosquitoes?! Don't bug out! All insects play a big role in the ecosystem by supporting crop pollination and soil health, feeding wildlife, and providing pest management. 🐝

Here are some simple strategies to stay safe while coexisting with insects:

• Mosquitoes: Limit outdoor activities at dawn and dusk. Use a fan to keep mosquitoes away. Remove standing water sources where they lay eggs. Apply insect repellents or wear treated clothing.

• Limit outdoor lighting: Insects are attracted to outdoor lights at night because they orient themselves by keeping a light source at their back, known as a dorsal light response. A light that's on all night will disorient insects and lead to their death. To help: reduce outdoor lighting, use motion-sensor lights, close window blinds, and use yellow or amber-colored lights.

• Wasps: Yellowjackets are more active in the fall and may be attracted to sweet foods and drinks. Keep lids on cups or use a clear cup to see if a wasp has landed in it. If a wasp is checking you out, blow on it or brush it away. A swat can lead to a sting.
