Darlington County Museum Grand Opening

Darlington, South Carolina—The Darlington County Historical Commission & Museum is thrilled to announce the grand opening of our unique museum addition at 204 Hewitt Street in Darlington, South Carolina. We invite everyone to come and celebrate with us on May 18 at 10 AM.

This grand opening event is a perfect opportunity for our community to experience the fruits of our collective effort. The new Darlington County Museum, which features artifacts, narratives, and elements of local history, is a testament to our shared heritage. Our team has been working tirelessly to create a museum environment that will offer citizens an exciting experience, and we can't wait to show you what we've accomplished.

At the grand opening event, we are offering more than just a glimpse into our history. We have planned door prizes, an interactive living history fair, and museum tours that promise to be both fun and educational. The ribbon cutting and dedication will kick off at 10, and the building will be open for tours until 3 p.m.

We have lost our treasured David Allen today, just a few months shy of hitting his 100th birthday. He loved this beautiful landmark- and in fact, he mowed the grass here into his 90’s. David was the most remarkable man, and words cannot describe how admired and loved he was.

David survived the Battle of the Bulge, returning home with a Purple Heart and a big piece of shrapnel that shattered his jaw from German soldiers. He came home to Hartsville to work at Coker Pedigreed Seed Company and enjoyed a long, fascinating career. He and his beloved wife Divver raised their family and were faithful members of Wesley United Methodist Church

And now, David is with his beloved Divver once more.
