I’m excited to share we have broken ground on the Robert Smalls Monument at the South Carolina State House. As Chair of the Robert Smalls Monument Commission, I am honored to help see this important project through to completion.

Robert Smalls was born enslaved in Beaufort and went on to change history. During the Civil War, he courageously freed himself, his family, and others by commandeering a Confederate vessel and delivering it to Union forces. He later served in the South Carolina Legislature and the United States Congress, dedicating his life to freedom, equality, and public service.

Monuments tell stories and reveal who we choose to remember. This monument will not merely honor one man. It will honor perseverance over oppression, citizenship over exclusion, service over division, and hope over fear.

I am especially grateful that Republicans and Democrats came together to make this historic moment possible.

“My race needs no special defense, for the past history of them in this country proves them to be the equal of any people anywhere. All they need is an equal chance in the battle of life.”

— Robert Smalls

And another step closer.

The U.S. Senate has approved legislation to award the Medal of Honor to my friend, Major James Capers. The bill now heads to President Trump’s desk, and we hope he will sign it soon.

In 1967 in Vietnam, Major Capers was severely wounded during an enemy ambush but refused evacuation. Despite his injuries, he continued leading his Marines and directing the fight until every member of his team was safely evacuated.

Major Capers’ sacrifice has been overlooked for far too long.

Let’s get this done!

James Capers Jr. led a small reconnaissance team through an ambush in Vietnam even though he had more than a dozen shrapnel and bullet wounds.

Today we honor the life and legacy of Jesse Jackson, a towering figure in the fight for justice and a proud son of South Carolina.

Over the years, our conversations were always centered on the same things, the people and the work ahead. He never lost sight of either. He challenged us to stay engaged, to stay hopeful, and to keep pushing forward no matter the odds.

We are losing giants from a generation that reshaped this nation. That reality is heavy. But the charge remains the same. We must continue the work. We must organize. We must build. And we must keep hope alive.

My prayers are with his family and all who were inspired by his life of service.
