Sunday evening, Hartsdale Firefighters were alerted to a house fire on Concord Ave. Our structure fire assignment consisting of Hartsdale units and mutual aid from neighboring departments was immediately dispatched. Engine 170 arrived on location in less than 4 minutes, declaring a 10-75 working fire on arrival. Firefighters immediately stretched a 2” hose line and encountered an intense fire in rear of the house and attic. The fire was brought under control in about 20 minutes. There were no injuries and the vast majority of the resident’s belongings were saved. Firefighters from Fairview, Greenville, Scarsdale, White Plains, Elmsford and Eastchester assisted us at the scene and in our quarters to provide coverage for the district. We also thank Greenburgh Police/EMS, White Plains Police and Con Ed for assistance on scene.

Winter Weather Fire Safety!

Winter weather, in addition to hazardous road conditions, brings with it a host of safety concerns. Your Hartsdale Firefighters encourage you to prepare ahead and stay safe this winter and during this current snowstorm.

HEAT
To counter the weather outside, many of us use fireplaces and space heaters or crank up the thermostat. Each of those presents its own safety concerns.

As we rely on furnaces to heat our homes, it is important to take a few moments to make sure yours has been professionally serviced so that it is clean and in proper working order. Check that the furnace is ventilated to the outside to prevent carbon monoxide from leaking into your home. Make sure all fireplaces and chimneys are inspected and clean before using them – and only burn approved fuels.

Space heaters are convenient but can be dangerous. Follow the manufacturers’ guidelines when using heaters. Always plug the heater directly into an outlet — do not use an extension cord. Do not put other electrical devices into the same outlet as portable heaters and always make sure flammable materials are a safe 3 feet from the heater. Unplug the heater when it is not in use and never leave a heater unattended.

When our homes are sealed up tight to keep the winter weather at bay, carbon monoxide poisoning becomes a more common problem. You can prevent carbon monoxide emergencies by never using a generator or propane-powered heater indoors and making sure all vents in the kitchen are open when you cook. In addition, check that you have a working carbon monoxide detector in your home and a plan to evacuate if the detector sounds. That plan should include calling 9-1-1 and staying out of your home until firefighters say it is safe.

VEHICLE SAFETY
Driving in winter conditions is always a challenge, but by preparing for the drive, you can arrive at your destination safely. Regular maintenance for your vehicle is always important, but even more so in the winter months. Proper care for your vehicle’s battery, windshield wipers, wiper fluid and tires are all critical in the harsh winter months.

It is also advised to keep extra warm clothes, water, a flashlight or flares and a blanket in your car in case of an emergency. If you live in a snowy climate, keep a bag of sand in your trunk in case your car gets stuck. And don’t forget your ice scraper — it is essential for keeping your windows clear of ice and snow before driving.

Finally, don’t warm your car up indoors. This may sound obvious, but — remember — your garage counts as indoors.

FIRE HYDRANTS
Your Hartsdale Firefighters also ask that you clear snow from your sidewalks and driveway. Do not pile snow near fire hydrants. If you see a hydrant with snow around it, please clear it. Fire hydrants buried in snow drifts can significantly slow down our response time. Your help in keeping hydrants clear will allow our team to focus on fighting the fire or emergency, and not wasting time shoveling the snow.

Stay safe!

Help us, Help you!

Just a friendly reminder that it is the responsibility of the residents who have a fire hydrant on their property to maintain the area around it. Town of Greenburgh Code requires a 3-foot clear space be maintained around every hydrant to allow our firefighters access to work in all directions around the hydrant in order to hook up hoses and operate the valves and caps in the event of an emergency.

A fire hydrant buried in snow can mean the difference between losing a house, possessions, or persons to the devastating effects of a fire.

It is important to follow this code year round. Keeping the hydrant on your property clear and accessible is critical to fire operations, and can save valuable time during an emergency if our firefighters need to use it.

Do not store objects or place items like posts, fences, vehicles or landscaping near the hydrant. When the wintertime snows hits, maintain the 3-foot minimum clearance around the hydrant by shoveling snow away from the area.

Always remember, although shoveling snow is great exercise, it can cause additional stress on those with heart conditions. Take breaks, let a neighbor help, or hire a professional!

Thank you for keeping your fire hydrants clear and visible.

Stay safe!

Water Main Break

At approximately 9:30am this morning, a 20" Water Main break occured in the area of 365 S. Central Ave (Archway Plaza).
As a result, residents in the Hartsdale Community have been experiencing a loss in water and water pressure in their homes and businesses.

The Greenburgh Water Department has been notified and is on scene working on mitigating the problem, which could take several more hours. There were a few areas of low lying flooding below the break, which are now under control.

Due to the loss of water to the Hartsdale Fire District, two Tanker Trucks with 2750 gallons of water each were called in from our Mutual Aid Departments to proactively provide us with a positive water source in the case of Fire Emergency.

Stay safe,

Honoring 52 Years of Service

52 years of dedication and commitment to the Hartsdale Fire Department was a reason to celebrate at the monthly meeting of the Hartsdale Fire District Board of Commissioners as the Department paid tribute to Rene Dupre for his many years of service.

HFD Chief Ray Maseda presented Dupre with a framed certificate commemorating his service to the HFD. Joining in the celebration to honor Dupre were his family, friends, current and former members of the department.

Rising to the rank of Captain in the volunteer department, Dupre joined HFD in 1974. During that time, Dupre was a fixture at fire and other emergency scenes, assisting members of the HFD protect and help the residents of Hartsdale.

His work with the department went far beyond assisting at fire scenes. Dupre was a regular part of Memorial Day ceremonies. He was also committed to preserving the history of the department which included refurbishing an old deck gun and bell that is now on permanent display at Station 2.

Dupre’s community service started long before joining the Hartsdale Fire Department. In 1963 he enlisted in the US Army where he was assigned to the 42nd Rainbow Division, 102nd Combat Engineering unit. He was honorably discharged in 1969 as a staff sergeant.

After leaving the army, Dupre went to work for the Millar Elevator Service Company for 42 years. He used his experience in the elevator service industry to help educate firefighters how to handle elevator emergencies. He regularly taught classes on this topic.

Operation Candy Cane 2025

Delivering more than 700 candy canes and holiday cheer, the Hartsdale Fire Department celebrated its eleventh annual Operation Candy throughout the community on Saturday, December 6th.

Santa, along with Rudolph and a team of elves, visited more than twenty communities, including the Marian Woods Retirement Home for religious sisters. Since it began in 2015, off-duty members of the Hartsdale Fire Department have given up a Saturday morning in December to spread Christmas cheer throughout the Hartsdale Fire District.

At each stop the elves handed out candy canes while Santa and Rudolph posed for pictures with the children and their families. After each photo was taken, the family was given a card with a number on it so that they could send an email and request a copy of the picture.

Every year, since its inception, Operation Candy Cane has attracted bigger and bigger crowds. Its increasing popularity is evident in one of the many notes the department received after this year’s event.

Once again, members of the community had surprises in store for Santa and his elves. As Santa arrived at one stop, a young boy stood there beaming and holding an oil painting of Hartsdale Fire Engine 169 and Car 2172 that he had his grandmother, an accomplished artist, painted for the fire department.

The Hartsdale Fire Department is proud to announce our annual Operation Candy Cane, which will take place, rain or shine, on Saturday, December 6th, 2025, from 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM. Off-duty Hartsdale firefighters will spread holiday cheer by escorting Santa Claus around the community in a fire engine sleigh, handing out candy canes to all attending children and adults.

See the next slide for the stops and anticipated times. To ensure everyone is at the correct location awaiting Santa’s arrival, the location-marker signs shown below will be posted at each stop. Due to the busyness of Santa’s schedule, please allow for some flexibility with our estimated arrival times. If you can’t make the posted time for your neighborhood, you can always meet us at another scheduled stop!

We ask that all children be accompanied by an adult, stay clear of the fire engine, and arrive at the designated locations 5–10 minutes prior to the posted times.
