1776-2026: It Happened Here in Westchester.
In commemoration of the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence this year, we are spotlighting important Westchester County sites with Revolutionary War significance. Peter Pratt’s Inn in Yorktown was originally constructed in 1780 as a barn of the Carpenter-Davenport homestead. It is located across from the historic Davenport House, which served as a command post for General George Washington's troops during the American Revolution and was the site of a deadly 1781 skirmish. Peter Pratt's Inn was a perfect place for the 152nd WCHS Annual Meeting & 250th Anniversary Luncheon held on May 31, 2026!

From the very beginning it was agreed the Statue of Liberty would be a joint venture: France would create the sculpture; America the stone pedestal.

In late May 1781, George Washington, accompanied by Henry Knox, arrived in Wethersfield, Connecticut, to meet with French officers led by the comte de Rochambeau. The officers met at the home of Joseph Webb, brother of Washington’s aide-de-camp Samuel Blachley Webb. The meeting, known as the Wethersfield Conference, resulted in the plan that led to the Siege of Yorktown. During the meeting, Washington argued for a joint assault on the British stronghold in New York City while Rochambeau supported a march south for a combined offensive against the British in Virginia, taking advantage of Admiral de Grasse’s fleet of ships being able to maneuver the Chesapeake Bay.

The conference ended with a flexible strategy. The generals created plans for both New York and Virginia—waiting for information on British troop strength in New York as well as news of the location and expected date of arrival of de Grasse’s fleet.

We are so grateful for HRP Chapter for being one of our first donors. Their grant paid to refurbish four sets of 1855 French doors that are now installed in the building. Restoration work continues towards a completion by the end of 2026. In the meantime, come see some of the artifacts on display at the Greenburgh Public Library.

In honor of National Historic Preservation Month this May, this page is sharing information regarding local historic sites that hold significant importance. This post is on the Odell House Rochambeau Headquarters (OHRH) located at 425 Ridge Road in Hartsdale.

During the Revolutionary War, the French general, le Comte de Rochambeau, stayed in this house for six weeks in the summer of 1781. While he was stationed there with his army of 5,000 men, General George Washington and the Continental Army were camped nearby in Ardsley. During this time, the two generals traveled throughout Westchester and the Bronx to gather intelligence on the British Army and Navy in occupied New York City.

A 2022-2023 DAR Historic Preservation Grants was awarded to Friends of Odell House Rochambeau Headquarters sponsored by Hudson River Patriots Chapter. The nonprofit group, Friends of Odell House Rochambeau Headquarters, is working with the town of Greenburgh to restore the property and create a museum.
