I was especially moved by Augustine’s idea of “disordered love” in Confessions. It reminded me that even in ministry and social service, our hearts can slowly drift out of order.
As Salvation Army officers, we often carry heavy burdens for people. Over time, constant needs, responsibilities, and pain can leave us emotionally numb. In those moments, it is easy to forget why we started serving in the first place.
We do not serve merely because there is work to do. We serve because God first loved us so deeply. His love compels us. And in return, we love Him. Out of that love, we continue to love and serve others.
When our love becomes properly ordered again — God first, everything else flowing from Him — burdened hearts can find renewed purpose, and numb hearts can come alive again.
