Tom Swan, the executive director of the Connecticut Citizen Action Group, joined Lamont at Wednesday’s press conference and offered praise for the governor’s new proposals as a response to what he called a “dishonorable assault by utility companies” over the last five years.

“These are very good, thoughtful responses for dealing with the cost crisis,” Swan said. “We may not agree with every line we’ve written here, but it’s a damn good start that we look forward to working with and going forward on.”

The governor proposed reforms targeting excess profits and requiring utilities to periodically seek permission to maintain their monopolies.

Community groups gathered Tuesday to protest a proposed expansion of a natural gas pipeline in the Peekskill area, marking what they described as the latest chapter in a fight that has stretched more than a decade.​

The project, proposed by Enbridge, a Canadian energy company operating pipelines across several states, would increase capacity on the Algonquin Gas Transmission line.​ A similar proposal, known as Project Maple, was defeated nearly three years ago. Opponents say the new effort, labeled Project Beacon, is essentially the same plan.

Some speakers urged investment in renewable energy instead of fossil fuel infrastructure. Assemblymember Dana Levenberg, a Democrat representing Westchester and Putnam counties, said public funds should support long term sustainable solutions.

"What we're trying to say is that we need to take the money that we've been investing in fossil fuels and put it into sustainable infrastructure. It's less expensive to build. It does create jobs just the same as well as making sure that it's something that can last for the long term," Levenberg said.

PURA is supposed to protect the public from utility companies’ greed and abuse.

It cannot do that when a powerful utility gets private access to its regulators, and a commissioner allows those backroom conversations to happen.

This story points to how utility companies go to extreme lengths to circumvent the rules to feed their greed. We need greater transparency. Communications between utilities and their regulators must be disclosed clearly and quickly.

And our elected leaders must continue fighting corruption, closing loopholes, and ensuring public officials answer to the public... not to the companies they are appointed to regulate.

Our I-Team obtained public records showing a state regulator was talking and texting with a utility company executive, while deciding on a requested increase in electric bills.
