DANBURY, Conn. (WFSB) - At least 70 people have been detained by ICE in Danbury over the past week, according to city officials and local advocates. Officials say most of those detained have not committed a crime.

Video from last week shows ICE agents detaining people against store fronts and detaining drivers in traffic.

Businesses on Main Street have struggled since ICE arrived last week. Ariel Perez, who does bookkeeping for local shops, said, “Business is slowing down. People are afraid to come out. So, sales are coming down and affect eventually employment. People are going to lose their jobs. Store fronts are going to close."

Senator Richard Blumenthal said he plans to hold ICE accountable. “We’re going to expose to the American people what is actually happening here. Again by going family by family, individual by individual, documenting the lack of any criminal record on the part of most of them. And then pursuing reforms in Congress,” he said.
Danbury’s mayor said about 6% of students in the district are missing school because their families are afraid and are hiding from ICE.

Reports that parents were arrested at bus stops prompted the school system to send home a note to parents. The note said that to keep students safe, bus drivers will take children back to school if they feel uncomfortable getting off at their stop.

The Trump administration is responding for the first time to reports that ICE agents arrested parents at Danbury bus stops.

From Senator Chris Murphy-This is a new evil from ICE: hunting families at school bus stops in Danbury. Waiting until children board before arresting their parents. Inflicting unthinkable terror and trauma on elementary schoolers and pretending this has anything to do with public safety.

I’m in Danbury today standing with the community, helping immigrants know their rights and demanding accountability for those being detained.

This has to stop.

FAMILIES DESERVE TO FEEL SAFE.
Over the last two days, at least 21 people have been detained by ICE across Danbury, Stamford, and Bridgeport. The true number may be much higher.
Behind every number is a family facing fear and uncertainty.
