At the 2026 Environmental Achievement Awards, we will celebrate State Senator Tony Hwang and his service to Connecticut as an Environmental Champion. We thank Senator Hwang for his steadfast dedication, thoughtful leadership, and commitment to advancing environmental priorities.

Sen. Tony Hwang has long been recognized by CTLCV as an Environmental Champion, known for his consistent support of major climate legislation and his leadership in advancing bipartisan solutions. As Ranking Member of the Transportation Committee and a Chief Deputy Republican leader in the Senate, he has demonstrated that protecting the environment can and should transcend party lines. Throughout his career, he has supported conservation efforts, promoted clean energy, and championed nature-based solutions to strengthen Connecticut’s long-term sustainability.

We are proud to present State Representative Mary Mushinsky with a Lifetime Achievement Award in October! 🌿

As one of the longest-serving members of the Connecticut General Assembly, Mary Mushinsky has represented the 85th House District as a tireless leader on environmental legislation. An avid kayaker and canoeist with both passion and expertise on all water-related issues, Mary has always fought and won protections for wetlands and rivers across Connecticut. She has championed efforts on recycling, packaging reduction, and open-space preservation. The passage and expansion of our state’s landmark Bottle Bill law will be remembered as a key component of her rich legacy. While serving as chair of the Environment Committee, she re-wrote our waste management statutes including mandatory recycling. Her unwavering commitment to sustainability and environmental rights has left its mark on our state.

🎉This week we're highlighting our 2026 Environmental Achievement Awardees. Up first: State Representative Jonathan P. Steinberg

Rep. Steinberg has been a leading voice in the Connecticut General Assembly on clean energy, environmental protection, and public health for more than 15 years. He has played a key role in major environmental efforts, including the plastic bag ban, fracking waste moratorium, GMO labeling, and microplastics legislation, while consistently advancing renewable energy, solar power, and utility accountability. As House chair of both the Public Health committee and the Energy & Technology Committee, Jonathan helped shape modern energy policy and led the charge on the State Water Plan to ensure Connecticut’s waters remain protected. His leadership has been instrumental in advancing sustainability, energy affordability, and long-term environmental resilience across the state.

Locally generated and rapidly deployable solar power is key to a clean and affordable energy future.

Proud of our staff for their work on this bill!

The bill, House Bill 5340, establishes targets for megawatts and budgets each year, creates dedicated solar rates for low-income households, creates successor programs for residential and non-residential and community solar programs and standardizes successor tariff programs for 20 years.
