State Representative Mitch Bolinsky (R-Newtown) hailed a $170,000 CT Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (DEEP) 2026 Recreational Trails Grant awarded to the Town of Newtown to support continued construction of the Housatonic Valley Rail Trail (HVRT) Extension.

Construction is already in process to join the new trail, with the existing Pequonnock River Trail at Newtown’s southern border with Monroe. When this section is complete, it will connect Newtown to trails as far south as CT's Beardsley Park & Zoo and, potentially, bring users to the Bridgeport shore.

“Investing in recreational trails is an investment in the vitality of our community, and will bring visitors,” said Rep. Bolinsky. “But before anyone could turn a shovel of dirt and begin, we had to secure necessary agreements from the property-owner, the Housatonic Railroad Company (HRRC), the CT Department of Transportation (DOT), and the United States DOT, for the right to access an existing, unused railroad right of way spur of the Maybrook Line. If this sounds complicated, that’s because it was! But – our Newtown Delegation found willing partners in HRRC and Connecticut’s DOT. The whole process began with a simple walk in the woods, and ended with a no-cost, perpetual agreement making this trail a reality. We’re very thankful to the Railroad for their generosity, as well as to our town attorney, and to CT DOT for their guidance.”

❤️ Light It Up Red!

I’m proud to join the Light It Up Red Campaign to raise awareness and support students with dyslexia and other learning differences.

Here in Newtown and Sandy Hook, we know how important it is to support our children, listen to parents, and make sure every student has the opportunity to succeed. Through my work on the Education Committee and conversations with local families and advocates, I’ve always believed that students learn in different ways, and our schools need to recognize and support those differences.

Every child deserves to feel understood, supported, and equipped to reach their full potential. That means listening to families, raising awareness, and turning that awareness into meaningful action.

I’ll continue advocating for students and families in Newtown and across Connecticut to ensure their voices are heard.

Let’s keep working together to make a difference. Light It Up Red! ❤️

Bolinsky Calls for Suspension of Connecticut Gas & Diesel Taxes

Newtown State Representative Mitch Bolinsky is calling on Governor Ned Lamont and legislative Democrats to join Republicans in suspending Connecticut’s gasoline and diesel taxes through the end of the year.

Connecticut drivers currently pay a 25-cent-per-gallon tax on gasoline and a 49.9-cent-per-gallon tax on diesel. Suspending the taxes through December 31 would save an estimated $2.75 per fill-up for gasoline and $5.49 for diesel.

September 11, 2001, is a day none of us will ever forget. God bless the families of those we lost, our first responders, and the United States of America.

Twenty-five years later, we still remember the innocent lives taken that day, the families forever changed, and the first responders who ran toward danger while others ran away.

As the State Representative for Newtown, I am especially mindful of the 161 Connecticut-connected lives lost on 9/11—and of the many New Yorkers who have since made our community their home. They brought with them not only their families and their hopes, but also the lasting imprint of that tragic day. Those we lost were our neighbors, friends, family members, and fellow Americans. Their names and their stories must never be forgotten.

Today, we pause to remember those we lost, to pray for their families, and to honor the extraordinary courage and sacrifice of the first responders who answered the call.

May we always remember, honor, and never forget.
