The Open Hearth Association

The Open Hearth Association To help men experiencing homelessness enhance their capacity for self-help, self-respect and dignity. The basement was used as a stock room for wood.

The Open Hearth was founded in 1884 by members of St John’s Guild of Christ Church as a reading room that opened four nights a week from 6pm to 11pm. The purpose the Hearth was to offer men a place to meet, read and socialize, as a means to avoid the social ills of that time. In 1893, the Guild joined with the Men’s Bible Class from Christ Church and incorporated The Open Hearth providing it with

more financial resources. Full time staff was hired and they raised funds to convert the reading room into a full time living facility with 40 beds. The first facility was located at Kilbourn Mansion on 135 Front Street. By 1900 the Open Hearth had outgrown its facility and moved to its second location at 73 Grove Street, the Silas Deane mansion. It accommodated 57 men, and had a large reading room, kitchen and dining room and space for the wood yard. This space was supplemented by a two story structure built adjacent to the mansion. Social and labor conditions in the early 1900’s and the ebb and flow of employment opportunities led many men to the Hearth. It became a refuge for the down and out, and the unemployed. In 1927, a four story brick building at 437 Sheldon Street was purchased to accommodate the growing number of visitors and residents. The basement was once again the hub of the wood business and a chair caning business was added. The Depression increased the number of residents to the point where men slept upright in chairs in the reading room as beds and floor space were full. The postwar years brought younger unemployed and unskilled men to the Hearth. The response was to reshape its programs emphasizing the importance of learning and gaining employment skills and changing the Hearth from a religious mission to a rehab facility for potentially employable men. In the 1960’s the homeless population evolved into its current population as many of the men presented with substance abuse, mental health issues, and a lack of life skills, education and employment history. Since its inception, The Open Hearth’s understanding of the challenges facing these truly disenfranchised men has evolved and deepened. In early 1991, it opened an addition which increased its resident capacity to 104 and its shelter to 25, and in the mid 1990’s a unique continuum of care model was instituted consisting of an Emergency Shelter, a Transitional Living Program (“TLP”), and single-room accommodations. The Open Hearth responded once again in 2002 to the ongoing needs of the homeless for permanent housing and initiated the innovative Homeownership Program which allows men to become self-sufficient, contributing members of society by purchasing their own homes.

On a Friday night at The Open Hearth, as the week began to settle and the building grew quieter, men experiencing homelessness pulled up chairs and sat down for dinner.
It wasn't a formal event. There were no speeches or announcements. Just a group of clients gathered around a table—sharing a meal, exchanging stories, and finding a moment of peace at the end of a long week.
What unfolded in that simple space was something quietly powerful.
The table was filled with food from many cultural traditions. Each dish reflected the backgrounds and lived experiences of the men we serve.
Together, they offered a reminder of an essential truth: recovery and the journey toward permanent housing do not happen in isolation.
At first, the table was about nourishment:
Full plates.
Quiet moments.
The comfort of a warm meal shared in a place of safety.
But as the evening went on, something more began to take shape. Men who have spent years surviving on the margins, homeless, often invisible and alone, experienced something deeply human: connection.
At The Open Hearth, we see this again and again. A home may be the destination, but dignity is what carries a man there. Before he can secure permanent housing, he must begin to rebuild his sense of self – to believe he is worthy of stability, community, and hope.
Johnny G., one of the men at the table, captured it this way: "Each of us is an ingredient in the recipe of hope and redemption that The Open Hearth provides."
That "recipe" is made up of moments like these where men are seen, welcomed, and valued. By restoring a sense of belonging and purpose, we help prepare them for the responsibilities of independent living.
"Sharing a meal in brotherhood at The Open Hearth helped me feel human again," shared Pat H. "It made me believe in my recovery."
These are not small moments. They are the building blocks of transformation. Ending homelessness is about more than a lease; it is about restoring the belief that a man is worthy of a hopeful future. When a man feels respected and supported, he gains the confidence to pursue employment, care for his health, and eventually, become permanently housed.
Around that table, something lasting began to form. Brotherhood grew through ordinary, sacred moments. That table became more than wood and chairs—it became a foundation for stability.
A place where men reminded one another that they are worthy of care.
A place where the skills of community and accountability were practiced.
A place where resilience replaced isolation and strengthened the path forward.
Because of you, that table existed.
Your generosity created the space for this connection to take root.
Your support helped turn an ordinary meal into a meaningful step on the journey from homelessness to permanent housing.
Because of you, men didn't just get through the night. They found strength, dignity, and the confidence to move forward.

Thank you for believing that healing—and home—is possible for everyone.
With deepest gratitude,

Marilyn E. Rossetti

Exciting Partnership Announcement!
The Open Hearth is thrilled to partner with the Hartford Public Library to offer The American Place Financial Inclusivity Literacy Program.

This past Friday, we kicked off the program with our Open Hearth Works - Neighborhood Ambassadors through a dynamic two-hour bootcamp focused on Understanding Money & Values and The Power of Habit in Setting Financial Goals.

Over the next four weeks, participants will dive into essential topics including budgeting, credit reports and scores, banking options, and how to protect your identity and assets. This lively, interactive workshop is facilitated by HPL TAP Instructor Michael Crutchfield and HPL TAP Coordinator Estela Morales Segarra.

We’re excited for what’s ahead, can’t wait for next week’s session—and are truly looking forward to many more meaningful collaborations like this in the future!
