The Geneva County Road and Bridge Department maintains approximately 905 miles of public roads. 505 miles of unpaved dirt roads and 400 miles of paved roads. Of the 400 miles of paved roads, 187 miles are eligible for federal funding. The operating budget is approximately $1.8 - $2.0 million dollars per year. Over 90% of the operating budget comes from gas tax revenue (last increas
e was 1992). The road and bridge department does not receive any sales tax revenue and only a small portion of ad valorem tax. Geneva County Engineer's office employs a total 39 employees. see below for a break down:
Road and Bridge - 25 employees. Includes superintendent, foreman, equipment operator III, equipment operator II positions
Engineer's Office - 8 employees (county and assistant county engineer are licensed professional engineers in the state of Alabama). Also includes a clerk, certified inspectors for road and bridge projects, project design personnel, herbicide, and roadway signs. Includes shop foreman, mechanic, fuel specialist, equipment hauler positions. Construction and Demolition Landfill - 1 employee. Certified landfill operator.
