HARTFORD OPENS WARMING CENTERS AS SEVERE COLD WEATHER ACTIVATION TAKES EFFECT SUNDAY EVENING

Hartford, CT – Today, the City of Hartford shared cold weather protocol information in effect until Tuesday, December 9th at 12:00PM, encouraging residents to seek warmth and shelter. Warming centers will be open Thursday, December 4th to Tuesday, December 9th. The City is also supporting overnight warming centers, which residents can utilize throughout the week.

"We've activated the severe cold weather protocol to ensure Hartford residents have easy access to a place they can go to stay warm," said Mayor Arunan Arulampalam. ““If you are in need of shelter over the next few days, please make sure to head to one of these day time warming locations or call 2-1-1 for the nearest overnight warming shelter.”

In Connecticut, black bear cubs are born in a winter den, usually in the first few weeks of January. Cubs weigh 6 to 12 ounces at birth but can grow to weigh over 100 pounds within their first year, especially if they have access to human-related foods.

Black bears that consume human-related food (i.e., birdseed, trash, pet food) on a regular basis can become habituated and food-conditioned. Food-conditioned bears pose a greater risk to public safety and often cause more property damage to houses, cars, pets, and livestock.

It won’t be long before black bear sows and their cubs will be active and in search of food. It is important to remain year-round and make sure any human attractants, especially bird feeders, are removed long before bears emerge from their dens in late March/early April.
