Today, the first piece of the old roof was removed. Facilities Manager Meagan Westfall shows both sides of the roof. The green is the top side. The green patina comes from years of exposure to the elements. The back side shows the true copper color. Note that even the nails are copper. The new roof will show true copper coloring for a while, until Mother Nature paints her lovely green patina over it.

Next week you will see some major work going on at our courthouse. On the West side of the courthouse, on the empty lot, supplies and work trailers will arrive. Later in the week, the old copper roof will begin to come off, in sections. You will first see the Ice and Water Shield going on. The new sections of copper roof will be custom cut and will begin to be installed. It will look very different to you. Our current roof has been in place for many years, and the copper has aged and shows a beautiful green patina. The new roof will be shiny as a new penny! It will take years for the roof to age. We are so excited to watch this process!

You will begin to see some major changes around the courthouse square next week. The public entrance on the North side of the courthouse will still be open. Employees will still enter from the South side. But there will be construction fence around the entire rest of the building. The solid red line on the map shows where the fencing will be. The fenced in area will also include a few parking spaces on both the east and west side of the building for equipment. We are so grateful that we are having our beautiful courthouse renovated to keep her historical value, charm and beauty intact. Please be respectful and patient as we deal with all this constuction.

We are so blessed to be working with the https://thetowerclockcompany.com/ for the repairs of our beloved clock. Phil Wright is a true craftsman when it comes to these historic clocks. Be sure to check out his website! His company helps restore clocks all over the country. In fact, he has worked on our clock previously. He has worked on the Blackford County Courthouse Clock since 1985. The clock hands that you saw removed yesterday are in fact made of wood! Part of the four pair of hands were restored or replaced by Phil over 20 years ago. Please continue to follow our post for more details on this renovation.

The Blackford County Courthouse was built in 1894. The courthouse has held up well in her 130-year life, however, she is beginning to show her age a bit. Over the next several months, you will see some major renovations to our beloved courthouse. From work on the clock tower and clock itself, to a new roof, new windows and some tuck point work, you will be seeing a lot of action here. The County Commissioners, County Council, Facilities Manager Meagan Westfall, and staff have been working on the plans for this project for a while now. We are all excited to see the work finally begin. With the Security Protocols in place, and the public entering only from the North side, at this time, you won't see a lot of inconveniences. Please follow this page, as we share the progress of this journey through photos and descriptions of the work being done.
