LIVES OF CASS COUNTIANS

"David M. Schrock was born in Wayne County, Ohio, March 21, 1870, the sixth child and third son of John and Elizabeth (Moser) Schrock. D. M. Came to Cass County in the winter of 1891. From the spring of 1892 to 1894 he was employed as a farmhand by Levi D. Zook of the Gun City-East Lynne area.
On Feb. 12, 1893, he was married to Susana Diener, daughter of George and Mary Ann (Mossholder) Diener of Hickory County, Missouri. Until 1895, they lived on a farm three miles northwest of Garden City where D.M. was employed by Jonathan Famuliner. Their first land purchase was in 1895, southwest of Garden City.
In the fall of 1904, D.M. bought 120 acres of farm land three and one quarter miles northwest of Garden City for $80 per acre. He later purchased an adjoining 80 acres making a total of 200 acres. Today, this is known as the Chester Yoder farm.
D.M. was known as a progressive farmer, one of the first to apply commercial fertilizer, and in 1914 began an association with the Vierginia-Carolina (V-C) Chemical Corporation as a dealer in fertilizer. He continued this association for 40 years. D.M. began planting an orchard in 1914 and by 1925 it covered 18 acres. For more than 20 years The Schrock Orchard was known community-wide for its fine apples, peaches, strawberries, cherries, and Early Gold plums. Hundereds of gallons of sweet cider and apple butter were also made there.
The Schrocks were active members of the Sycamore Grove Mennonite Chruch. All eight Schrock children attended and graduated from the Clearfork Grade School.
The eight children born to D.M. and Susana Schrock included: Alice Elizabeth Schrock, Nov. 27, 1893-April 14, 1976; Clara May Schrock, Dec. 27, 1895-Aug. 6, 1985, married to Elba R. Yoder; Ada Pearl, Dec. 12, 1897, married to Jess Hartzler; Earl Jay, March 27, 1900-March 31, 1921; Mary Ann, Feb.26, 1902; Lawrence Allen, Oct. 7, 1905, married Carrie Rebecca Zook who died March 2, 1974, married Lydia A. Zook; Florence Ellen, Oct 7, 1905, married Christy P. Yoder; Albert Ray, March 18, 1909-Oct. 20, 1983."
