If you've attended the Greater Augusta Support Group, chances are you've met April. She loves getting to know people, making new friends, and sharing a laugh with the group. It's also a chance for her to get out of the house and enjoy a little time away from Mom every now and then!

April focuses on making the most of life. She had a long career as a Special Olympics athlete, competing for 20 years in many events such as in many events such as golf, basketball, soccer, swimming, and kayaking. One of her proudest accomplishments was advancing to the National Games in 2016! She is an avid horse rider and enjoys cooking.

When asked what she's looking forward to this summer, April doesn't hesitate: going to camp to see her friends and a trip to Williamsburg! She is also excited to visit with her nieces. She is an excellent aunt, always quick to show a pic and talk about how great they are.

We are so glad April is part of the Brain Injury Connections family. Her sense of humor and outgoing personality bring so much to our support groups.

“Lids for Kids is about building habits that last a lifetime and making sure every child in our community has the chance to ride safely and confidently," said Anne Fitzgerald, Executive Director, "A helmet is one of the simplest, most effective tools we have to protect a child's brain — and yet so many kids ride without one."

Did you know that Brain Injury Connections has a strong relationship with the JMU Department of Social Work? We have an intern each semester. They learn the ropes of case management by working side by side with our Case Managers. They work with clients one on one, help out with the client survey and work on outreach projects. The students are a great help to the team. They are always willing to do any project!

Partnerships like this are integral to our program. These internships/practicums are mutually beneficial. We ensure that they get a worthwhile learning experience, they help our Case Managers.

This year, Caitlin, a Master’s student, revamped our client survey in the Fall semester; utilizing her research skills. Quinn, an undergrad, was our Spring social work intern and worked closely with our clients and even lead a support group!

It’s great to see how caring and professional these students are when they come to work with us. We are happy to send them into the world with the hands-on experience.

Congratulations to Caitlin and Quinn!
