After 14 years in the classroom, Susan was ready for a change — she wanted a role that was less stressful, but still let her do what she loves most: helping people. She found exactly that at Brain Injury Connections of the Shenandoah Valley, where her years of teaching experience turned out to be the perfect foundation for supporting clients on their path forward.

Of the many clients Susan has worked with, one story stands out to her above the rest: a client who came to BICSV homeless and without resources, and who Susan helped guide toward stable housing and steady income. Together, they built a plan and worked step by step toward her goals.

"She did the hard work, but we worked together to make the goals happen," Susan says. "It is a wonderful feeling to know that you helped her get there."

As Susan steps into this next chapter, she's looking forward to spending time with her granddaughter, traveling, and returning to hobbies she loved when she was younger. But she's not stepping away from BICSV for good — she plans to stay connected as a volunteer.

"I feel lucky that I was able to work with BICSV," Susan shares. "I have become passionate about our cause and its importance in people's lives. It provides such a valuable resource to our community, and I hope people continue to support BICSV's mission."

Thank you, Susan, for the compassion, dedication, and heart you've brought to this work — and for all the lives you've helped change along the way.

BICSV is inviting middle and high school students across the Valley to put their creativity to work for a good cause. The organization's first-ever Student Art Contest opens August 24 and runs through September 28, welcoming submissions from students in Augusta, Bath, Highland, Rockbridge, Rockingham, Page, and Shenandoah counties.

Contest details:
Who: Middle and high school students in BICSV's service area (Augusta, Bath, Highland, Rockbridge, Rockingham, Page, and Shenandoah counties)
When: August 24 – September 28
Prize: Dunkin' gift card, plus the winning design produced on merchandise of the student's choice via Bonfire
Winner announced: October 2, Harrisonburg Hub, First Friday client art show

We are so excited to have Quinn Fritsche join our team this month! Some of you may recognize Quinn--she was our James Madison University Social Work intern this past spring. She's living proof that community partnerships work—and our clients are the ones who benefit most.

Quinn will serve as our Greater Augusta Case Manager, and will be working with clients in Augusta and Highland counties.

"I'm thrilled to join BICSV as a Case Manager," said Quinn. "Over the past five years, I've provided direct support and helped foster community connections for individuals from all walks of life, with a particular focus on supporting older adults and individuals with disabilities. My journey with BICSV began as an intern, where I discovered my passion for supporting individuals with brain injuries and walking alongside them through the complexities of life. Outside of work, you'll find me tending to my (many) plants, baking, enjoying the outdoors, and volunteering with individuals with disabilities. I am looking forward to being an official member of the BICSV team, and getting to know the individuals and families I will be supporting."

We had a blast today at the Reg "Monk" Fix Summer Camp teaching the kids about concussions. They learned how concussions happen, signs and symptoms, and that they need to rest. They also got to try out our cool new concussion simulators!

Many thanks to Augusta Health for their sponsorship of our Mind Matters Program and to United Way of Rockbridge and Walmart for sponsoring our Lids for Kids Helmet program.
