“By the late 1860s, Americans in various towns and cities had begun holding springtime tributes to the countless fallen Civil War soldiers, decorating their graves with flowers and reciting prayers.

It is unclear where exactly this tradition originated; numerous different communities may have independently initiated the memorial gatherings. And some records show that one of the earliest Memorial Day commemorations was organized by a group of formerly enslaved people in Charleston, South Carolina less than a month after the Confederacy surrendered in 1865. Nevertheless, in 1966 the federal government declared Waterloo, New York, the official birthplace of Memorial Day.

Waterloo—which first celebrated the day on May 5, 1866—was chosen because it hosted an annual, community-wide event, during which businesses closed and residents decorated the graves of soldiers with flowers and flags.” Source: History.com

Earlier this month, the Bucks-Mont Collaborative joined more than 200 individuals for a HealthSpark Foundation Community of Practice to discuss how to take action on homelessness and affordable housing in Montgomery County. Our very own Executive Director, Kristyn DiDominick, was honored to join a panel on housing advocacy to lift up the work that the Collaborative Advocacy Network (The CAN) is doing.

Kudos to the leaders at The Montco 30% Project, 10,000 Friends of Pennsylvania, and the Housing Alliance of Pennsylvania, for leading the way in this work and sharing your wisdom and expertise with all of us! We were so thankful to join this panel with you. And big shout out to HealthSpark Foundation for this beautiful community of practice and advocacy leadership!

We need more neighbors like this. "The Back Bay neighborhood associations – which wanted to preserve the historic brownstone and its commercial tenants – had caught wind of the development plans. In two public letters of support, the associations advocated for affordable housing to be expedited in the neighborhood. “We’re often accused of being NIMBYs, but we’re not an island to ourselves,” says Mr. Roetter. “It’s the right thing to do. And it’s also a vehicle through which we inform ourselves of what the problems really are.”

Garry Monteiro pauses and looks down, twiddling his thumbs. He contemplates the biggest change to his life last year. There’s a glint in his eye th

We believe that everyone deserves a great place to call home and the choice of where to live. We’re collaborating with partner orgs across the state to build the PA Housing Choices Coalition because there are too many barriers and not enough options for people to find homes in the right places. You can help us today with a gift to 10,000 Friends in the Extra Give and your funds will be stretched from the stretch pool. Can we count on to help? Please give today 11/17 before 11:59pm on our giving page: https://www.extragive.org/organizations/10-000-friends-of-pennsylvania Thank you for being a friend!

Fireflies face a variety of threats, but we are learning that there are ways that we can help them, including turning your outdoor lights off at night, especially during the summer firefly season.
