Swatara Township

Swatara Township In 1799, just twenty-three years after the signing of the Declaration of Independence, a court order divided Lower Paxton Township into two equal parts.

Swatara was the name chosen for the southern part of the area. The word is thought to be from an Iroquois Indian word meaning "Where we fed on eels." Swatara Township is comprised of 14.6 square miles, equivalent to 9,344 acres. An atlas of 1875 shows Churchville, New Benton, and Highland Village as population centers. Today we know them as Oberlin, Bressler, and Enhaut, respectively. Wheat and co

rn fields have become Lawnton, Lenker Manor, Harrisburg Estates, Rutherford Heights. Georgian Manor, Lawnford Acres and Chambers Hill. On April 1, 1911 Swatara obtained First Class Township status with a population of 5,630. According to the 2020 census, 27,284 residents now make up the Township. Board of Commissioners

Lane restrictions begin tonight for pavement patching on Route 322 at the Route 322/Chambers Hill Road Intersection Improvement Project in Swatara Township, Dauphin County. The contractor also will shift barrier to open access to Hilton Street from westbound Route 322 while beginning work on the new tie-in to Milroy Road at the Chambers Hill Road intersection.

Weather permitting, beginning at 9:00 PM, Sunday, June 7, the contractor will begin work on the new tie-in to Milroy Road at the Chambers Hill Road intersection. Crews will shift barrier to open the new spur from westbound Route 322 to Hilton Street. This work will be for Hilton Street access only. Milroy Road will remain closed. Trucks and through traffic will be prohibited.

Crews will work round the clock until the tie-in is complete. This work includes raising Milroy Road to match the new Route 322 grade.

During this operation, the Route 322/Chambers Hill Road exit and entry will be reduced to a single lane, with traffic controlled by flaggers.

In addition to this work, patching will also begin Sunday night in both directions of Route 322 from Webner Road to Kunkle Avenue. There will be lane restrictions in both directions of Route 322 from 9:00 PM to 6:00 AM Monday through Thursday nights until the work is complete.

Milroy Road remains closed from the Route 322 intersection to the Grayson Road intersection to allow the contractor to complete work on Milroy Road and finish the roundabout at the intersection of Milroy and Grayson roads. A detour is in place.

To access Milroy Road, westbound Route 322 traffic will continue west to Witmer Drive, turn right and proceed to Grayson Road, turn right and proceed to Milroy Road. To access Hilton Street, eastbound Route 322 traffic should turn right onto Webner Road, left onto Chambers Hill Road then go straight to the signalized intersection with Route 322 and proceed through the intersection to Hilton Street.

Motorists should be alert and drive with caution through the work zone.

This work is part of the reconstruction of the intersection of Route 322 with Grayson Road and Chambers Hill Road in Swatara Township.

🚧 Bishop Park Remains Closed 🚧

While we are excited for everyone to enjoy the new playground and park improvements, we ask that you please refrain from using the equipment until we officially announce that the park is open.

Construction work is still ongoing, and the entire park remains an active construction site. For the safety of all residents, the playground equipment and surrounding areas are not yet ready for public use. We would hate to see someone injured.

We appreciate your patience and understanding as crews continue to work on the project. We look forward to welcoming everyone back to Bishop Park very soon!

Please continue to watch our social media pages for updates and the official reopening announcement.
