πŸ“šβ€οΈ Celebrating Adult Literacy & Family Literacy Week! β€οΈπŸ“š

Literacy opens doors - to better opportunities, stronger families, greater independence, and a brighter future.

At Catholic Charities, our English as a Second Language (ESL) program helps adults build their English skills, gain confidence, and better navigate life in their community. Whether it’s communicating at work, helping children with school, or simply feeling more comfortable in everyday conversations, learning English can make a meaningful difference.

During Adult Literacy & Family Literacy Week, we’re celebrating everyone who is learning, growing, and working toward a brighter future. We’re proud to walk alongside our students and families every step of the way! 🌟

πŸ“– Learning changes lives. Strong families build strong communities.

September is National Recovery Month πŸ’š - A Story of Hope, Redemption & Second Chances

For one Evergreen House resident, recovery began with a difficult realization: addiction had taken control of her life. Years of poor choices, broken relationships, and consequences eventually led to incarceration - and a moment when she knew something had to change.

After her release, she found that change through Evergreen House.

Evergreen House provided the structure, accountability, and support she needed to begin rebuilding her life. Most importantly, she found people who believed in her - even when she struggled to believe in herself. The encouragement of the Evergreen House staff helped her recognize her potential and begin to see a future beyond her past.

Recovery also brought her to Narcotics Anonymous, where she found a community that understood her struggles and taught her the importance of honesty, responsibility, perseverance, and staying connected to a support system.

Then came another important milestone: a job. She showed up every day, worked hard, and remained committed to proving to herself and others that she could be dependable. Her dedication eventually led to a promotion to Assistant Manager.

That promotion represented so much more than a job title. It represented trust, responsibility, growth, and a second chance.

Today, she continues to live in recovery and carries with her the lessons and support she received at Evergreen House and through NA. Her story is one of redemption, resilience, and the power of second chances.

πŸ’š Recovery is possible. Change is possible. And no matter how difficult the past may be, the future can still be bright.

During National Recovery Month, we celebrate every person who is choosing recovery, every day - and the people who walk alongside them.

We Remember

Today, Catholic Charities pauses to remember the lives lost on September 11, 2001, and the families, first responders, service members, and communities forever changed by that day.

We remember the courage of those who ran toward danger to help others. We remember the compassion of neighbors and strangers who came together in the days that followed. And we remember the importance of standing with one another in times of grief, uncertainty, and need.

As we remember, may we continue to choose compassion over fear, unity over division, and service over self-interest.

πŸ•ŠοΈ May we never forget.

A Story of Hope & Family Healing πŸ’™

When 13-year-old Maya began receiving Family Based Services, she was struggling with significant anxiety and depression. With a history of trauma and multiple placements, she often isolated herself, shut down emotionally, and spent much of her time alone in her room.

Our York/Adams Family Based team worked alongside Maya and her caregivers to better understand her emotional needs and build stronger, healthier connections. Together, they developed new ways to respond to Maya with calm, consistency, emotional safety, and support. The team also helped strengthen communication between her caregivers and encouraged her father to become a more active source of support and connection.

Over the course of services, Maya made meaningful progress. Her anxiety and depression symptoms decreased, she isolated herself much less, and she learned to communicate more effectively when she was upset or needed help.

Her relationship with her father grew stronger, and her caregivers became more confident in listening, responding calmly, and connecting with her emotionally. Maya also found greater success at school, became more involved in school activities, and developed healthier peer relationships.

✨ This is what Family Based Services can do - help families heal, reconnect, and grow stronger together.

We are proud of the progress Maya and her family made and grateful to be part of their journey.

🏠 Everyone Deserves a Place to Feel at Home.

A room can be more than four walls and a bed.

It can be the place where a mother takes a deep breath and realizes she and her baby are safe.

It can be the first peaceful night of sleep after experiencing homelessness.

It can be a space where a woman in recovery begins to believe in herself again.

That’s the heart behind Catholic Charities’ Adopt a Room program. ❀️

Our community has already stepped up in an incredible way, helping us transform rooms and spaces into welcoming places of comfort, dignity, and hope.

But 27 rooms and spaces are still waiting to be adopted.

Could you help us give one of these spaces a fresh start?

A parish, business, organization, family, or group of friends can come together to adopt a room and help make it feel like home.

✨ One room. One transformation. One more place where hope can grow.
