Pennsylvania Animal Response Team

Pennsylvania Animal Response Team Providing prevention, preparedness, response, and recovery for animal emegrencies Many of these animals could have been saved by a coordinated response plan.

In today’s world, we all worry about the threat of a natural or man-made disaster. Animals are especially vulnerable when a disaster strikes because they must rely on us for help. In 1999, Hurricane Floyd claimed the lives of millions of animals in North Carolina and thousands more were separated from their owners. From this tragedy, the State Animal Response Team (SART) concept was born. In 2004,

Pennsylvania adopted this concept to address its animal-related disaster response needs. Pennsylvania Animal Response Team (PART) was created through a private-public partnership to serve as a unifying network of organizations, businesses, federal, state, county and local government agencies, and individuals that supports the prevention, preparedness, response and recovery for emergencies affecting animals. Because disaster response needs to happen at a local level, PART builds County Animal Response Teams (CARTs) across the state. County coordinators are selected to lead the development of county teams consisting of volunteers who will respond to emergencies at the local level. Goals of PART

- To facilitate a rapid, coordinated, and effective response to any emergency affecting animals;
- To decrease the health and safety threat to humans and animals;
- To minimize the economic impact of emergencies affecting animals; and
- To prevent or decrease the spread of disease during emergencies affecting animals.

🐾 Because Pets Are Family Too 🐾

This weekend, our Disaster Recovery coordinator, had the opportunity to complete Companion Animal Sheltering Training with the Lancaster County, PA Animal Response Team - CART and the Pennsylvania Animal Response Team.

When disaster strikes, our focus is always on helping people recover. But for many families, their pets are family too. In the middle of a fire, flood, storm, or other emergency, ensuring the safety and care of companion animals can make a difficult situation just a little easier for those affected.

The Lancaster County Animal Response Team (L CART) is made up of dedicated volunteers who assist with the sheltering, care, and support of animals during emergencies and disasters. Their work helps keep pets safe while families focus on navigating the challenges they face after a crisis.

For our Disaster Recovery Coordinator, this training gave her additional knowledge and resources to better assist families when animals are involved in a disaster situation. The more prepared we are, the better we can serve our community when they need us most.

A special thank you to Sarah from the Animal Response Team for two outstanding days of education, hands-on learning, and sharing your expertise.

The amount of information covered was incredible, and the passion everyone brought to the training was inspiring.

L CART is always looking for volunteers who want to make a difference in our community. If you love animals and want to help during emergencies, consider learning more about how you can get involved.

Because recovery isn't just about rebuilding homes. Sometimes it's about helping every member of the family find their way home. ❤️🐾

Somerset CART was activated at 13:49 this morning (1:49 AM) for horses loose on Lambertsville Rd, Stoystown. Three CART members responded. Two horses were quickly located, as was their owner, but one small horse was believed to be missing. We headed up the road on foot to search. We all wore reflective safety vests and had flashlights. Our vehicles were parked near the farm with hazard lights flashing. We were about 400’ from the farm, walking back toward the farm along the road when we heard a vehicle. We moved to the side, I waved my flashlight up and down to signal the driver (who was traveling at least 50 mph) that we were there and to please slow down. I also expected them to stop so I could tell them to watch for a horse that may be on the road. The driver never slowed down, let alone stopped.
PLEASE when you see vehicles with hazard lights on and people in reflective vests waving flashlights in the middle of the night (or any time for that matter) SLOW DOWN! We all know emergency responders and highway workers are killed in these situations. JUST SLOW DOWN, We want to make it home to our families. Fortunately, the horses are all safe.
