Remember to:
• Celebrate responsibly and safely
• Don’t drink and drive
• Don’t drive distracted; watch the road, not your phone
• Plan ahead for traffic
• Keep an eye on children in crowds, in the water, and near grills or other hazards

Most of all, use common sense to make good decisions to keep yourself and those around you safe! Enjoy the holiday.

The Pennsylvania Capitol Police had a presence on and off the course at the recent Tunnel To Towers Foundation 5K Run & Walk in Hummelstown.

Lt. Justin Chortanoff and Officer James Brunner ran the course of behalf of the department, while Corporal Darrell James assisted with route management & safety for the event, in addition to interacting with the public as part of the Community & Engagement Unit.

The Tunnels To Towers 5k Run & Walk Pays tribute to the first responders, military service members, and civilians who lost their lives on 9/11 and specifically retraces the steps FDNY firefighter Stephen Siller ran through the Hugh L. Carey Tunnel (formerly the Brooklyn-Battery Tunnel) to reach the Twin Towers where he sacrificed his own life while saving others.

The race had a special connection for both runners. Lt. Chortanoff was serving in the military during 9/11 and was deployed shortly after as part of Operation Enduring Freedom, while Officer Brunner worked for Hummelstown PD before joining the Capitol Police.

The runner's registration fees, of which more than 90% of goes directly to Foundation programs, were paid for through the Capitol Police “No Shave November Funds” which are collected and used to support various charitable activities throughout the year.

On Wednesday, October 7, 2025, from 8:00 a.m. – 9:30 a.m. in the East Wing Rotunda, the Pennsylvania Capitol Police are inviting everyone to stop by for some coffee provided by C&J Catering and conversation provided by us in celebration of National Coffee With A Cop Day.

Coffee With A Cop provides those who work in or visit the Capitol Complex with an opportunity to engage with the officers who ensure their security and well-being in a relaxed atmosphere.

Participants can ask questions, make suggestions and get to know each other.

Everyone is invited and encouraged to attend. We hope to see you there!

The American Red Cross Greater Pennsylvania Region recently honored Pennsylvania Capitol Police officers, Ed Coghill and David Goreski with the Lifesaving Award for Professional Responders.

They were recognized for their roles in saving the life of an individual who suffered a medical emergency in February of 2026 at a Commonwealth building.

This is the highest award given by the American Red Cross to an individual or team of individuals who saves or sustains a life by using skills and knowledge learned in an American Red Cross Training Services course.

Laura Burke, executive director of the American Red Cross of Central Pennsylvania, presented the award to Officer Coghill, who accepted his award and the award for Officer Goreski who is currently on military leave.

The Pennsylvania Capitol Police have expanded our Physical Security Assessment capabilities! Officers James Smith, David Cheek and Jacob Levin recently completed the Federal Law Enforcement Training Centers Physical Security Assessment Training Program.

The three-day program trains individuals on several characteristics vital to effectively assessing the physical security aspects of existing facilities and buildings. Among the program’s focus is learning how to evaluate government buildings for vulnerabilities and developing strategies to resolve those vulnerabilities. This training also enables the officers to continue their skills development with additional, advanced training in this area.

The Capitol Police look forward to the knowledge and expertise they will bring to the department as we continue to conduct security assessments for our state-owned building and facilities.
