PA DEPARTMENT OF HUMAN SERVICES • APR. 12, 2021
OFFICE OF CHILDREN, YOUTH, & FAMILIES
Keeping PA Kids Safe from Abuse

DHS believes that protecting Pennsylvania’s children from abuse and neglect is a shared responsibility. Protecting children from abuse and neglect unites lawmakers, community partners, the child protective services system, citizens, and families to provide a safe environment for children throughout the commonwealth.
In partnership with counties, schools, and community organizations, the department is promoting evidence-based programs that give parents the skills and supports, both formal and informal, that they need to ensure that their children grow up in safe and loving homes. By working together and relying on natural supports like family members and neighbors, we can improve outcomes for families and protect our children.

April is Child Abuse Prevention Month and we all need to do our part to make sure that children are safe and cared for during this stressful time.

With more Pennsylvanians getting vaccinated everyday, we are headed towards the light at the end of the tunnel. However, continued social distancing can leave some children and families isolated and this can increase the risk of child abuse and neglect. Be watchful and aware of the children in your community. If you have concerns that a child is not safe or being cared for, take action - it could save a child's life.

Homebound Services (STAR)
Homebound Disabled Services

Are You or a Loved One Homebound?
Are you or a loved one unable to visit the library regularly due to age, illness or a disability?

If this applies to you, and you live in Cumberland County or the Shippensburg Area School District, you may be interested in our STAR homebound services.

What Is STAR?
STAR stands for Service to Adult Readers. STAR service provides homebound adults with free, personalized selection and delivery of regular print books, large print books, audiobooks, music CDs, DVDs, and pre-loaded Kindle eReaders and tablets.

How Does STAR Work?
About once a month, a trained library volunteer will bring library books or audiobooks to your home, apartment, or nursing home room. You will be able to use them for up to 6 weeks. (DVDs are available for 3 weeks.) Your volunteer will then pick up and return the materials to the library for you.

How Much Does This Cost?
Nothing. There is no charge for STAR service.

Would you like to Volunteer?
Would you like to help select and deliver library materials to older adults in the STAR Program?

At our virtual Rally to Lift the Lockdown on March 12, we will be taking a moment of silence to honor the lives of the nursing home residents who have died this past year.

During the moment of silence we will show a “remembrance collage” with pictures of residents who have passed away. If you, or someone you know, has lost a loved one since the visitation lockdown began in March 2020 and would like them to be included in this special collage, please send a picture of your loved one to [email protected] by March 9th, 2021 along with their name, your name, your relationship, and anything else you'd like to include.

We are also considering other ways to memorialize the thousands of residents who lost their lives during the pandemic, so please let us know if we can use their photo as part of those efforts or if you'd prefer we just use their picture during our moment of silence.

Thank you so much for helping us pay tribute to and show our respect for those who have died over the course of this tragic year.
