National EMS Week: May 17-May 23, 2026
The officers and members would like to wish all EMS providers a safe and happy EMS week! We would like to especially thank those who staff our EMS units on a daily basis. Throughout the year, units and staff respond to approximately 2,500 calls for service, as well as providing coverage during the ten days of the Delaware State Fair and other celebrations and events including the harness racing seasons.
On October 1, 1950 Harrington began providing ambulance service. Up until this time anyone needing emergency transport were taken by the local undertaker or a Milford Hospital ambulance. The only ambulance service prior to Harrington's in the area were at Milford Hospital, Dover Hospital, and Seaford Fire Company. The Harrington ambulance answered calls north almost to Dover, East almost to Milford, south to Bridgeville and west to the state line. Over the last 76 years, our company has grown from one Cadillac ambulance, to four fully equipped units, able to handle anything from a general sickness to a CPR or severe trauma.
In 1974, President Gerald Ford authorized EMS Week to celebrate EMS practitioners and the important work they do in our nation's communities. Back then, EMS was still a fairly new profession and EMS practitioners had only just started to be recognized as a critical component of emergency medicine and the public health safety net.
A lot has changed since then. EMS is now firmly established as an essential public function and a vital component of the medical care continuum. On any given day, EMS providers help save lives by responding to medical emergencies, traumas and anything in between. EMS may provide both basic and advanced medical care at the scene of an emergency and en route to a hospital. EMS practitioners care for their patients' medical needs and show compassion to their patients in their most difficult moments.
We would like to thank all members and staff, both past and present for your dedication to ensure a great service to the members of our community and surrounding area.
We hope everyone has a safe and happy National EMS week!
