History

July 1986 – Bradley Nash, mayor of Harpers Ferry, asks local veteran Jack Albertson to form and head a veterans committee and to advise him on veteran related issues. The committee, entitled “Veterans Affairs and Military Activities Committee”, included Jack Albertson, retired army dentist Bob Johnson, and Agatha “Pete” Murphy, World War

II Navy nurse. February 1993 – Dixie Wilshire organizes and chairs a committee to design and erect a Veterans Memorial at the Harpers Ferry Junior High School. The Board of Education approved the construction of the memorial. The initial flags for the memorial were to be supplied by the offices of Senator Byrd and Congressman Wise. January 1995 - Veterans Affairs and Military Activities Committee votes unanimously to officially form a veterans association. The chosen name of the organization is the “Harpers Ferry/Bolivar District Veterans Association”. Our organization is a proud supporter of the Jefferson High School Junior ROTC program. In conjunction with the Harpers Ferry Middle School, we conduct the annual Memorial Day and Veterans Day ceremonies. Veterans Dixie Wiltshire and Paul Ranalli have continuously served as good will ambassadors between Harpers Ferry Middle School and the Harpers Ferry/Bolivar District Veterans Association. Through their tireless efforts a mutual bond of support was developed which proudly continues to this day.
