The Wheatland County Sheriff's Office stands in unwavering support of Lieutenant Kirby Dempster as he bravely battles cancer. Kirby is not only a dedicated law enforcement officer but a man of deep integrity, strength, and compassion. His courage in the face of this fight is an inspiration to us all.
To our brothers and sisters at the Fergus County Sheriff's Office — please know that you are not alone. We extend our prayers and unwavering support during this challenging time. We are with you, shoulder to shoulder, as one law enforcement family.
Stay strong, Kirby. You’ve got an entire community behind you.

One of our own has a fight coming his way and we will stand with him during this battle!!
LT Dempster was recently diagnosed with cancer, so we will be hosting a fundraiser for him November 14th in the AG building at the Fairgrounds. We would love to see the community Kirby has served for many years attend. If you’d like to donate to the silent auction, contact Cory or Katie at the sheriffs office! Thank you!

On 10/10/2025 at approximately 2200hrs, Patrol Sergeant Tim McKenna was conducting patrol in the area of The Flats in Harlowton when he observed a Kia Soul style vehicle traveling at a slow rate of speed. Due to the rash of vehicle break-ins this summer, Sergeant McKenna attempted to observe/intercept the vehicle, but was called away for another Calls for Service. Once cleared, Sergeant McKenna returned to the area, observing the vehicle once more before losing sight of it. A short time later, Sergeant McKenna received a report of the vehicle he was observing that appeared to be operating with another vehicle, a dark colored Jeep, along with 2 individuals on foot in all black in The Flats. Sergeant McKenna immediately responded as Undersheriff Kevin Froese was contacted for backup. A short time later, Sergeant McKenna observed 1 of the suspect vehicles and conducted a traffic stop to identify the occupants. While no thefts have been reported, it is under our assumption that due to Sergeant McKenna & Undersheriff Kevin Froese’s heavy saturation patrol of The Flats, a potential theft of property/prowling of the area was effectively stopped. This serves as a reminder yet again, please ensure your vehicles are locked as well as your residences. As of now, 2 potential suspects have been identified, and we are continuing to investigate this incident. The Wheatland County Sheriff’s Office remains committed to safeguarding our citizens and your property.

Last week we said goodbye to Chaplain Jack Runner, as he officially retired. Jack served as our Chaplain for many years, being there for those in the community during their times of loss, and us for the horrors we witness throughout our careers. Everyone at WCSO wishes you the best in your future endeavors, and thanks you for all of your hard work. God bless you Jack.

On 8/4/2025 at approximately 14:30 hours, a Harlowton resident reported an individual that was passed out behind the wheel in a high-traffic area of a local business. Patrol Sergeant Tim McKenna responded and observed the vehicle leaving the area, so he conducted a traffic stop. It was determined that the occupant was driving while under the influence of drugs, and he was arrested. A subsequent search of the vehicle via a search warrant resulted in the seizure of 4 grams of powdered fentanyl, 1 gram of co***ne, and 1 gram of crystal methamphetamine. This is the largest seizure the Wheatland County Sheriff's Office has recorded of powdered fentanyl to date. Powdered fentanyl has been on the rise in Montana and is extremely dangerous to not only the public but to law enforcement officers. Even the smallest amount inhaled, ingested, or absorbed can lead to an immediate overdose. As usual, we thank our public for your continued reports and support. The Wheatland County Sheriff's Office remains committed to curbing the drug epidemic in our state. We will continue to assist those who have fallen ill to this sickness with their sobriety and future well-being.
