The goal is to benefit the community by giving the tourist driving by our community a reason to stop. Harlowton, Montana is a small town with a population of around 955 people (according to the 2020 census). It's the county seat of Wheatland County, located in central Montana. History: Founded in 1900 as a station stop on the Montana Railroad, Harlowton was once a bustling railroad town. It was the eastern terminus of electric operations for the "Pacific Extension" of the Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Paul and Pacific Railroad ("Milwaukee Road"). Today, the town still has a strong connection to its railroad past. Economy: The town's economy was largely agricultural, but like many other small towns in Montana, it suffered from consolidation and a lack of diversification. Today, however, Harlowton is experiencing a bit of a resurgence. One interesting fact - Harlowton is home to Montana's largest wind farm, the Judith Gap Wind Energy Center, which is, at times, the highest producing facility in the U.S. Things to Do: If you're interested in history, Harlowton is a great place to visit. The town has a number of historical sites, including the Milwaukee Road Depot and the Harlowton Town Hall. For outdoor enthusiasts, Harlowton is a great jumping-off point for exploring the Crazy Mountains or the Little Belt Mountains.

Fellow Kiwanian, Steve Martin, shared his experiences with us on the Quigley Shoot in Forsyth, MT. It originally started with about 30 participants and now numbers well over 600 and come from all over the world. It's a black powder shoot and rifles are replicas of the early buffalo hunters. A Quigley rifle can cost around $2500 and most have iron sites. Targets are placed between 300 to 1200 yards. A perfect score in a round would be 48, currently no one has achieved that. Steve has placed in the top 10 a couple of times. I find it interesting that if the sun is just right you can actually see the bullet in the last 30 yards. Steve shared many interesting facts about the rifles, ammo and targets. THANKS for sharing your passion with us.
