The Free Chess Club of Harlingen

The Free Chess Club of Harlingen We aim to create and foster a strong chess community in Harlingen, dedicated to the public learning and playing of chess. All ages are welcome!

There is a war going on for the character of our youth. This war will determine the future of our communities and nation (and the world). Whether you coach chess, boxing, guitar, or are a classroom teacher, you are , like it or not, teaching our children about character, respect, and integrity. Chess just happens to be a very convenient vehicle for the transferring of the principles we hold dear:

accountability, analysis, consequences. Whether you realize it or not, you have already taken sides in this war for our future. The only question remains: are you going to give more time and resources to the side you have chosen? Our opponents are the apathetic consumer capitalism that views our children as nothing more than a market or customers. We should not be ashamed to view our youth as the Natives viewed their land (before our culture took over): a precious item that we cannot own nor sell. We must leave them better than we find them, but realize the same powers that bought Manhattan for a box of Mardi-Gras beads are trying to get ahold of our youth. Give them your time. They need mentors, guidance, and role models. Teach them that you can give to one another and expect nothing in return. Teach them this by volunteering.

“You play to WIN.” - Herm Edwards

Unfortunately, we need to discuss cheating and point shaving (or ratings shaving). If a coach is telling a child to sandbag (lose on purpose or “throw” a game), that coach is not worthy of our respect.

It has come to our attention that a team from Texas may have been involved in throwing over 20 games in order to manipulate the USCF National Championship. This is a scandal, but the below blogpost exposes a bigger issue: the coach in question wrote a book explaining his thoughts on sandbagging...except he must have forgotten that we can simple lookup the EXACT tournament game he was talking about...

I’m sorry, but this is the wrong message for our youth. We play to win. Do your best and shake hands afterwards. To teach anything less is disgraceful. Convincing kids to game the system is wrong. These are our future leaders, please act accordingly.

Let me say first that my assistant principal, John Galvin, is the greatest detective in the world . He's the one who originally caugh...

A historic day for US Chess: Our new World Championship Challenger is Grandmaster Fabiano Caruana! Caruana won the Candidates tournament in Berlin a whole point ahead of the field. He will face Magnus Carlsen for the World Championship in November 2018 in London. What a time to be an American chess fan!
