This one habit behind the wheel can cause your insurance premiums to skyrocket!

Under South Carolina's new hands-free law, it is ILLEGAL to use or support a mobile device with any part of your body while driving. Choosing to break this law could result in fines and points assessed against your license — increasing the cost of your insurance premiums.

With the 100 Deadly Days of Summer beginning tomorrow, it is important now more than ever to put the phone down and just drive.

A friendly reminder from SCDPS. Also, a Dr’s note only applies to the light transmittance. A Dr’s note does not grant you the ability to tint your windshield.

South Carolina has strict window tint laws — and getting it wrong can cost you!

Remember, windshields may only have a small strip of tint at the very top (cannot go below the AS1 line).

Avoid the heartache of a hefty fine by hiring a professional tinter who knows the law! For more information, refer to SC Code Section 56-5-5015 at https://www.scstatehouse.gov/code/t56c005.php.

Good morning everyone. SCDOT finished the traffic study for the area surrounding the Town Park that was requested. As a result, the speed limits on Creighton (at Shortcut Rd), John, West, and Mill Streets have been reduced to 25 miles per hour to match the speed zone on South Railroad. New speed limit signs have been placed on Creighton, John, & Mill Streets.

We also forwarded the request for a reduced speed limit on Second Bend Road, but that request was denied.

Our hearts go out to the Dorchester County Sheriff's Office. MAJ Moultrie was the definition of a good man. He was beloved and respected by generations of cops, as well as anyone who ever met him. Rest easy sir.

It is with deep respect and solemn reflection that Sheriff Sam Richardson announces the passing of Major Ernest S. Moultrie, a distinguished and trailblazing member of the Dorchester County Sheriff’s Office and the law enforcement community of South Carolina.

Major Moultrie passed away on April 23, 2026, at approximately 8:30 p.m.

𝐒𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐟𝐟 𝐒𝐚𝐦 𝐑𝐢𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐫𝐝𝐬𝐨𝐧 𝐫𝐞𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐬𝐞𝐝 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐟𝐨𝐥𝐥𝐨𝐰𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭:

“Throughout his career, Major Moultrie exemplified professionalism, dedication, and leadership. He rose through the ranks, becoming the first African American Detective Sergeant in Dorchester County, serving across the county and municipalities including Summerville and St. George.

His career progression continued as he was promoted to Lieutenant, Captain, Major, and ultimately Chief Deputy, serving as the second-in-command to Sheriff Carl Knight.

Major Moultrie initially retired in 1997 after decades of distinguished service.

However, his commitment to law enforcement and public service did not end there.
He returned to continue serving the Dorchester County Sheriff’s Office and remained an active deputy until his final retirement in 2022.

At that time, he was recognized as the longest-serving law enforcement officer in the State of South Carolina.

Born on May 5, 1932, in Summerville, South Carolina, to David and Molly Moultrie, Major Moultrie was the youngest of seven children.

He graduated from Alston High School, where he participated in football and basketball.

He also proudly served his country in the United States Air Force during the Korean War, completing basic training at Lackland Air Force Base.

Major Moultrie’s life was defined by service—to his country, his community, and the profession of law enforcement. His legacy is one of perseverance, leadership, and breaking barriers, leaving a lasting impact on generations of deputies who followed in his footsteps.

On behalf of the Dorchester County Sheriff’s Office, we extend our deepest condolences to the Moultrie family and all who had the privilege of knowing and serving alongside him.”

Funeral services celebrating his life will be announced at a later time.

At the direction of Sheriff Sam Richardson, all Dorchester County Sheriff’s Office deputies are hereby authorized to wear a mourning band in honor of the life and service of Major Moultrie until the conclusion of his funeral services.

If you or anyone you know gets a text, phone call or email about unpaid tolls or unpaid tickets, please see below from the South Carolina DMV. This also applies to so called law enforcement calling you asking for money because you have a warrant. NO law enforcement agency is going to call, text or email you for money to clear up any kind of issue.

This is a reminder to remain vigilant when it comes to "Unpaid Ticket" and "Overdue Traffic Fine" scam texts, which are on the uptick recently.
Please remember that SCDMV does not send texts to collect on unpaid tickets or tolls.
The only legitimate webpage is www.dmv.sc.gov; don't let a fake text redirect you or your money elsewhere.

Good morning. A state-wide burn ban will go into place this afternoon. Please spread the word.
