TeamHeights Came Together to Celebrate Excellence

Yesterday, more than 200 City of Harker Heights team members gathered alongside Mayor Michael Blomquist, City Council, our leadership team, and special guest State Representative Hillary Hickland for one of our favorite traditions, our Employee Recognition Ceremony.

Twice each year, we pause the daily work of serving our community to celebrate the people who make it all possible. From new hires beginning their journey with TeamHeights to employees earning promotions, receiving awards, and reaching significant accomplishments, the afternoon was dedicated to recognizing the incredible individuals who keep our city moving forward every day.
And what better way to celebrate than with street tacos and Caribbean ice cream?

What makes events like this special isn't just the food or the awards. It's the opportunity to look around the room and see the amazing people behind every service we provide and the amazing work they are also part of. The streets that are maintained, the parks that are enjoyed, the emergencies that are answered, the permits that are processed, the water that flows, and the countless other ways our team serves nearly 40,000 residents every day.

To every member of TeamHeights: thank you for your dedication, professionalism, and commitment to making Harker Heights an exceptional place to live, work, and visit. Your work matters, and yesterday was a reminder that it does not go unnoticed.

Please join us in congratulating all our honorees and celebrating the outstanding team that serves Harker Heights each and every day!

Jump Into June Wellness Challenge Champions

Mayor Blomquist celebrated the winners in our Jump Into June Wellness Challenge who committed themselves to moving more, building healthy habits, and taking small steps toward a healthier lifestyle. Whether it was jumping rope, knocking out jumping jacks, taking a walk, or simply making wellness a daily priority, every effort counted.

We're excited to congratulate our two winners:
Betty DeLong – 1st Place
Julie Helsham – 2nd Place

Thank you both for embracing the challenge and inspiring others to put their health and wellness first. Your dedication proves that wellness isn't about perfection; it's about showing up each day and making progress.

We also celebrated our Sudoku winner, Richelle Otero

A huge thank you also goes out to everyone who participated. Every walk taken, every jump completed, and every healthy choice made was a victory worth celebrating.

The US National Weather Service Fort Worth Texas says storm chances return late Thursday as a cold front approaches the region. Severe weather is not expected, but lightning, gusty winds, and brief heavy rain will be the main hazards. Rain chances persist through Sat before temperatures increase once again.

Construction continues to make steady progress along the corridor, with roadway, sidewalk, drainage, and concrete improvements completed throughout much of the project area. Crews have also completed additional curb-and-gutter work, ADA-compliant ramps, driveway improvements, and stormwater outfall upgrades. Recent milestones include placement of tack coat and base material across most project limits, completion of traffic signal foundations, and the start of subgrade modifications on the southern portion of the corridor. Utility coordination with electric and communication providers remains ongoing, and preparations for the new traffic signal system are underway. Residents will begin to see additional signage and signal-related infrastructure being installed as work progresses.

Like many large infrastructure projects, construction has faced challenges. Utility relocations resulted in temporary delays earlier in the project, and work was briefly paused when the base material delivered did not meet testing requirements. The non-compliant material was removed and replaced before construction resumed, ensuring project quality and long-term performance. A TxDOT-mandated design change also pushed the project back a few weeks. Despite these setbacks, construction activities continue moving forward. Substantial completion is currently anticipated by July 30, 2026, delivering safer roadways, improved accessibility, enhanced drainage, and upgraded transportation infrastructure for the community.

The City continues to work to push this project to proper completion. We understand the frustrations and thank everyone who has been so understanding.

For additional project information, contact Trevor Jergonson, Project Manager, at 254-953-5663
