🚨 September is National Preparedness Month! 🚨

Emergencies can happen at any time; severe weather, power outages, flooding, fires, or other unexpected events. Being prepared ahead of time can make a big difference when every minute counts.

Take time this month to make sure you and your family are prepared:
• Create a family emergency plan and know where you will meet.
• Build or update an emergency supply kit with water, nonperishable food, medications, flashlights, batteries, first-aid supplies, and other essentials.
• Make sure you have a way to receive local weather and emergency alerts.
• Keep important documents and emergency contact information in a safe, accessible place.
• Plan for the needs of children, older adults, individuals with disabilities, and pets.
• Know multiple ways to safely leave your home or neighborhood if evacuation is necessary.

Preparedness isn’t about expecting the worst, it’s about making sure you’re ready to protect yourself and the people you care about when the unexpected happens.

Today is World Sexual Health Day. Help us recognize the importance of today by encouraging healthier conversations and empowering people to make informed decisions about their health.

Sexual health is an important part of your overall health and well-being. World Sexual Health Day is an opportunity to promote education, prevention, healthy relationships, informed choices, and access to confidential healthcare services.

The Breckinridge County Health Department encourages everyone to take an active role in protecting their s*xual health. That can include:
• Practicing safer s*x
• Getting tested for s*xually transmitted infections (STIs)
• Staying up to date on recommended vaccines, including HPV and Hepatitis B
• Having open, respectful conversations with partners
• Seeking routine and preventive healthcare
• Knowing the facts and helping reduce stigma surrounding s*xual health

Remember: Taking care of your s*xual health is taking care of your health. Testing, prevention, education, and honest conversations are nothing to be embarrassed about.

⚠️ MEASLES UPDATE: KENTUCKY ⚠️
The Breckinridge County Health Department wants our community to be aware that the Kentucky Department for Public Health (KDPH) has confirmed an ongoing measles outbreak in Kentucky. Multiple cases have been identified in several counties, and health officials continue to investigate additional cases and possible exposures.

Measles is highly contagious and spreads through the air when an infected person coughs, sneezes, or breathes. The virus can remain in the air for up to 2 hours after an infected person has left an area.

We encourage families to check their vaccination records and make sure they are up to date on recommended MMR vaccination.

đź’ś September is Su***de Prevention & Awareness Month đź’ś

This month, we join communities across the country in raising awareness about su***de prevention, reducing stigma surrounding mental health, and reminding everyone that hope and help are available.

Su***de can affect individuals, families, friends, and entire communities. One of the most important things we can do is create a community where people feel safe asking for help and where conversations about mental health are met with compassion rather than judgment.

• Check in on the people around you.
• Listen without judgment.
• Take conversations about su***de seriously.
• Encourage someone who is struggling to reach out for support.
• Remind others that seeking help is a sign of strength.

If you or someone you know is experiencing a mental health or suicidal crisis, call or text 988 to connect with the 988 Su***de & Crisis Lifeline. Support is available 24/7.

Throughout September, we encourage our community to help spread a simple but powerful message: You matter. Your life matters. And you do not have to face difficult moments alone.

Together, we can raise awareness, reduce stigma, encourage connection, and help prevent su***de.

Heat Advisory goes into effect today! Be prepared for HOT weather this week!

Some of the hottest temperatures of the season are expected over the next several days as daytime temperatures are expected to soar into the mid-to-upper 90s. While humidity levels will be relatively low, heat index values should still reach the upper 90s and low-to-mid 100s each afternoon. Take necessary precautions if you have to be outside this week!
