Today, May 31st is National Dam Safety Awareness Day, to promote public awareness, responsibility, and best practices regarding dam safety.

On this day in 1889, the South Fork Dam near Johnstown, Pennsylvania failed, killing more than 2,200 people, making it the deadliest dam-related disaster in United States history.

In Big Horn County, the Yellowtail Dam's concrete rises 525 feet high above the Bighorn River. The dam was completed in 1967, creating Bighorn Lake which extends into Wyoming. Part of the Pick-Sloan Missouri Basin Program, it provides flood control, irrigation, recreation, and hydroelectric power, and is a key feature of the Bighorn Canyon National Recreation Area. The dam is named after Crow leader Robert Yellowtail, who opposed its construction, and its creation transformed the river into a world-class trout fishery below the dam.

On this day of Memorial, we honor those that gave the ultimate sacrifice for this great Nation.

In Flanders Fields
John McCrae, 1915.

In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.
We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.

Thank you to all of those who have served, to their families, and to those who paid the ultimate sacrifice to make this land great. Be safe this Memorial Day.

As we come to the conclusion of EMS WEEK 2026, we thank everyone for your support and kind words. Our leadership, under the auspicious guide of Director Patti Medicinehorse, Assistant Director Jeff Howard, and Training Coordinator Dustin Will spoiled us with delicious treats and goodies, keeping our bellies full and our caffeine levels on par, and showing us we are appreciated every day.

Since 1973 the ambulance has been operated by Big Horn County. Ambulance designs and layouts, training, and equipment have changed significantly in the past 50+ years. Gone are the days of a speedy trip to the hospital with little or no medical care.

Today Big Horn County Ambulance provides modern medical care following national guidance and research. Our ambulances carry life saving medications and equipment for all age groups, with professional trained prehospital providers. No longer are "attendants" or "ambulance drivers", with limited training showing up at emergencies- but instead certified and licensed EMT's, Advanced EMT's, Paramedics, and Critical Care Paramedics.

During this EMS Week 2026- we thank all the EMS providers through the years- whom have made significant and life changing impacts on the citizens and visitors of Big Horn County.

In 1974, President Gerald Ford authorized EMS Week as a time to celebrate EMS professionals and the important work they do in our nation's communities. National Emergency Medical Services Week brings together local communities and medical personnel to honor the dedication of those who provide the day-to-day lifesaving services of medicine's frontline.

As Big Horn County Ambulance quietly celebrates our achievements and accomplishments through the year, we are humbled by the support and kindness we have received from so many. We spotted this local business marquee and banner highlighting our week of celebration. Thank you Far West Casino for the support and shout out!
