Yesterday we experienced one of the hardest parts of wildlife rehabilitation. A Migizi (eagle) was brought to us by one of our partners, With Feathers after being struck by a vehicle. Despite our efforts and a thorough assessment of its injuries, they were simply too severe, and the kindest decision was humane euthanasia to prevent further suffering.

These moments never get easier. For Anishinaabe people, the Migizi is more than a bird — it is our messenger. Losing one is felt deeply.

Eagles are often drawn to roads by roadkill and can be difficult for drivers to see until it is too late. You can help by slowing down, staying alert, and watching for wildlife near roadways, especially in areas near forests and water.

While not every story has the ending we hope for, every effort made matters.

Ever wonder why rehabilitators “imp” feathers on birds?

Imping is a technique used to repair broken or damaged feathers by attaching a donor feather to the bird’s existing feather shaft.

For birds in rehabilitation healthy feathers are critical. Flight feathers are not just for flying; they help with balance, steering, hunting, and survival. Even one damaged feather can impact a bird’s ability to soar, hunt, or safely return to the wild.

Without imping, a bird may need to wait months, or sometimes over a year, for a natural molt to replace damaged feathers. By carefully matching and repairing feathers, rehabilitators can help restore proper flight and potentially shorten a bird’s time in care.

Today, with the help of a few of my fellow rehabilitators, we imped two primary feathers on our girl. One more step toward release and one step closer to getting her back where she belongs.

Chi Miigwetch to Jared from A.R.K. / Association to Rescue Kritters and Kaitlyn from North Sky Raptor Sanctuary for lending their time, expertise, and helping hands. Our girl is strong, and I could not have done this without you both!

Every step in rehabilitation is a team effort and today was another important milestone on her journey.

The Youth Conservation Corp (YCC) is accepting applications now! Apply soon to interview with us. Earn some money this summer break by supporting your community and working outside. The YCC is a Natural Resource Department (NRD) summer program intended to provide LTBB youth 14-18 years old with a summer job opportunity while familiarizing the youth with biological, environmental and conservation enforcement professions of the Tribe.
Learn to identify invasive species and how to promote native varieties. Get on the water to gather population data and support our local fisheries. Spend time outdoors to improve wildlife habitat. Gain first-hand experience of how the NRD programs support LTBB treaty rights.
