Exploring the quiet corners of northern Michigan… from the Tunnel of Trees and M-119 to the lakes, small towns, and coastlines that make this region unforgettable. M-119, also known as the Tunnel of Trees, is a scenic drive in Harbor Springs, Michigan that runs along the coastline of Lake Michigan. The road is lined with trees that form a canopy overhead, giving the impression of driving through a

tunnel. To get to M-119 from Harbor Springs, head north on US-31. Turn left onto Lake Shore Dr/M-119 and continue to follow M-119. The Tunnel of Trees is on the left. Please note that the Tunnel of Trees is a two-lane road and can be busy during peak tourist season, so drive carefully and enjoy the scenery.

Great news!

The rumors are true: After more than 100 years as one of Northern Michigan’s most iconic state landmarks, big changes are finally happening at Legs Inn.

We are repairing the front roof.

After a century of Northern Michigan winters, it was time.

Yes, the cast-iron stove legs that give Legs Inn its name have been meticulously removed to complete the restoration work. Rest assured, the iconic “legs” will return once the project is complete.

And despite a few wildly creative local theories, Legs Inn isn’t going anywhere — we’re just getting a little less drippy.

Thanks again for your understanding and patience as we strive to preserve our small piece of Northern Michigan history for the next generation.

A powerful reminder that even the Tunnel of Trees can change overnight.

This drone footage shows the recent washout along M-119, first reported on April 13, 2026, after heavy rain and snowmelt reshaped a piece of one of Northern Michigan’s most iconic roads.

You can still visit all of your favorite spots along the Tunnel of Trees, even with all the road issues!

You can still visit all of your favorite spots along the Tunnel of Trees, even with all the road issues!

Please know that despite the recent flood damage and M-119 road closures, our local businesses will still be open this upcoming season and the detour is really quite minimal! We're all looking forward to the kick off of summer and can't wait to see everyone again soon.

Major washout on M119! Between Good Hart and Cross Village.

We are very saddened to report that an area of Tunnel of Trees M-119 has collapsed due to excessive rain fall combined with snow melt (just south of Division between Cross Village and Good Hart). This comes after a partial shut down of the road earlier in the week south of Stutsmanville, also due to spring erosion. Our thoughts are with friends in Pellston and Cheboygan who are far facing worse situations. 🙏🏽

04/10/2026

M-119 from Stutsmanville to Terpening is closed until further notice.

Please seek alternative route, a detour will be in effect during this time.
