The past two weeks have been a whirlwind of planning, curveballs, disappointments and triumphs. I have had the support of Veterans, residents, the municipalities that I serve under, the Commonwealth, the country, private companies and the VA itself during this unexpected busy time.

While the weather kept us from having the parade this year for multiple reasons including safety, both Hanover, Massachusetts & Town of Hanson, MA, as well as the American Legion Post 149 Hanover, MA pushed forward with our Remembrance Ceremonies. A pretty big turnout despite the entertainment of a parade.

This is what community does. We support each other because it’s the right thing to do. For this past two weeks, we have all come together in honor of those who have come and gone before us. For my colleagues that take care of Veterans everyday, Memorial Day is everyday. Not because we have to. We signed up to do this job. And we stay doing this job because it is our passion to do this at the level we take it to. All of the VSOs I work with, are top notch. We work together and support each other, in every aspect.

Along with the support I mentioned, I have a great team in the Hanson Patriotic Observance Committee. When I first was introduced, we had two solid members of the community that were volunteers (David Beauvais & Marcus Linn). Since then, we gained another member (Joe Campbell) and have a few more requests to fill the final seats of the five total on the committee. Organization is being established to ensure the future of planning community events. Keeping traditions that have been held for years while we make some improvements to keep the community coming together more and more.

I have plenty to say about those that have been there and supported my office. Not just the past couple of weeks, but since I started. But, there is too many to state individual reasons. They see what is possible with Veterans Services. While the position is held by one person, a community that stands behind it, is what makes it a success.

Thank you to Rory O’Connor of Hanover High School Bands for providing Taps at all locations in Hanover. Graham Allen of the Troop 38 and Andrew Palmer of Hanover Cub Scout Pack 37 for volunteering at the ceremony itself. US Navy Retired Master Chief Chuck Merritt III for dawning your uniform every year to lay the wreath at the memorial. You stand guard proudly, continue to serve with honor and answer the call to support your community.

And, to the Hanson Athletic Association for their generosity to use their facility. In short time, they stepped up and gave us a place to bring the community together for some food, a meet & greet for myself with those I serve, and what appears to be a great partnership in support of our Veterans. I am looking forward to the future.

More thanks provided in the comment section. I truly apologize if I missed anyone. I have dealt with so many people that have helped that it’s hard to keep track. More pics to come and will do my best to tag those I missed.

Here’s to the future of honoring & preserving the memory of our Fallen Service Members, by serving the ones that are still with us.

Memorial Day is everyday for myself and my colleagues. Honoring those who have gone, by caring for those still with us. Ensuring the memory of their lives are preserved by our actions.

Never forget their sacrifices. And to my colleagues; In the words from a very special gift, “Never forget the difference you’ve made”.

Remember those that have gone. Today and everyday.

**We are still holding ceremonial observances and the Hanover Scouts Pancake Breakfast will still happen from 7:30-9:30. Only the parade portions have been cancelled. Please consult the graphic below for your respective towns**

Due to tomorrow’s forecast, we have no choice but to call off the parade. We will still hold a modified observance to honor our Fallen Service Members. Please review the graphic below that show the new plans for each town.

**Attendees, please bring umbrellas and appropriate clothing as these ceremonies will take place without structure to keep the rain off of you.**

We hope you will still join us. Rain will not keep us from holding them in our hearts.

Summed up in one picture, symbolizes what today’s effort was all about. We celebrated a man that we did not know, and yet, touched so many lives. Today we brought a Veteran the love and support he more than deserved. By all accounts, he was a wonderful human being and we made sure his spirit felt our presence.

A huge thank you to Chief Michael Casey of Hanson Police Department and his entire department, Chief Robert O’Brien of Hanson Fire Department and his crew, as well. Along with the Town of Hanson, MA, Hanover, Massachusetts, Hanson DPW, SEMLEC, Massachusetts State Police, MBTA Special Operations Motor Cycle Unit. They all made it happen. Without them, today would have been chaos.

Another big thank you to the Nam Knights VMC and the Patriot Guard for providing the Fire Line and Flag Line.

Thank you to Leighton-MacKinnon Funeral Service and Saint Joseph the Worker Church for accommodating such a big event.

To the American Legion Post 149 Hanover, MA, the Massachusetts Executive Office of Veterans Services, and to the best crew of VSOs in Massachusetts, thank you for being there to help me pull together some major points to this day. Chris, Christine, Declan & Ally were there to assist along the way. All of the VSOs in Massachusetts are top notch and would answer my call when needed.

There are too many to mention that I did meet, and those strangers that I never did. Your support and outpouring of love has been nothing short of amazing.

This picture I took, are the roses that someone placed on Seaman First Class John Bernard Arnold’s casket. To you, I thank you for placing them there. It was a fitting symbol to end this wonderful day.

Update May 15, 2026:

Thank you all again for your continued efforts to reach out to volunteer your time at the funeral of John Bernard Arnold III. At this moment, all volunteer offerings are no longer needed. We have had an incredible response to this matter and are now working on ensuring the safety of the attendees, and the area in which the service is taking place.

All those wishing to attend the service, please check this post prior to the event, for any instruction/information released. We want this ceremony to be as special as the Veteran we are honoring.

Again, volunteers are no longer needed. But, your attendance at the church is welcomed.

Thank you.

**Edit: The response to this has been more than amazing. Planning has been underway since early this morning when I first was notified of the situation. At this time, your attendance will be the best way to help send this Veteran off to his final resting place. Once again, thank you to all that have reached out offering to be pallbearers, tagging different people and groups. This is exactly how to our community (not just the Veterans) should come together. This is more than I could’ve ever imagined when I received the first message asking for help.

I look forward to seeing everyone there on Monday. It’s shaping up to be a fitting send off**
