It’s been a minute!! I wanted to share some awesome pictures of the school garden. I’m so impressed with the garden beds the students designed this year.
The strawberries and potatoes are flowering.
The broccoli is ready to pick.
The green onions are fabulously lush.
The cauliflower is starting to form.
The squash is exploding.
The garlic is nearly ready to pick.

Thank you for all the garden family volunteers so far this season and for those signed up for the rest of the summer. This would not be possible without you!!!

Here is a link to an infographic on the wintersowing process. It was created by Sheryl Mann of Winter Sowing (Vegetable Gardening with Sheryl Mann). This is an excellent and inexpensive way to start seeds without investing in a grow light system.

It has been a bit since we posted and we've been busy! The school year is well under way and we've started our Garden Club. We had so much interest, we opened another section so that we could accommodate all 60 kids that signed up! And, we now have a waiting list! So exciting! Because of this, we've begun adding to our garden plots and intend to have students plan for what they are going to plant in the beds. Earlier this week we got some wood and on Thursday, the Garden Club members applied Tung Oil to seal the wood. If you drove by Horizon, you might have seen all 70+ pieces of wood propped along the walls of the school. Today, we used all of that wood and created 5 beds and installed them. We may be adding a couple more beds before next spring! A photo is below.

We also built a larger, 3 sided compost container so that we can begin composting food from our lunchroom and would have a place to put all of the "waste" from our Garden. There is also a photo below.

We will try to update more frequently and as we have photos.

We've been having fun in the garden during this spring/summer season. We are so happy that many of our Garden Club families are providing support this summer and the garden is really taking off! If you are interested, stop on by and take a look, we are starting to see the "fruit" of everyone's labor! Thank you for your continued support!

We had a perfect afternoon for some garden fun! Thank you to everyone that was able to come out and help. The garden looks fantastic. We can’t wait to watch it all grow!

Not sure why I didn’t think to post here but one of the many projects we are trying to implement next season is a hay/straw bale garden. I’ve secured a few half bales but if anyone near Horizon Elementary is tossing their fall hay/straw bales this week and would like to donate them to us send a message! Thanks!
