Mayor’s Office Assures Preservation of Historic St. Elizabeth’s Hospital Artifacts
HANNIBAL, MO — The City of Hannibal recognizes the deep historical, cultural, and spiritual significance that St. Elizabeth’s Hospital holds for generations of Hannibal residents. As plans move forward regarding the demolition of the former hospital property, the City is committed to preserving important pieces of its legacy for future generations.
Mayor Darrell McCoy announced today that any statues, monuments, religious displays, or similar artifacts remaining on the property will be carefully preserved and offered to the Catholic Church for continued stewardship and use.
“St. Elizabeth’s Hospital served our community for decades and holds a special place in the hearts of countless families,” said Mayor McCoy. “We want to ensure that the religious and historical elements of the property are treated with the respect they deserve and remain accessible to those who value their significance.”
In addition, the City is actively developing a community preservation program that will allow Hannibal residents to obtain commemorative bricks from the hospital during the demolition process. Details regarding distribution procedures, and timelines will be announced once the program is finalized.
The brick preservation initiative is intended to provide residents with an opportunity to own a small piece of Hannibal history while helping preserve the memory of a landmark that played an important role in the community’s development.
“We have heard from many citizens who have personal connections to St. Elizabeth’s—whether they were born there, worked there, received care there, or had family members who did,” McCoy said. “This program will give people the opportunity to keep a tangible piece of that history.”
The City will continue working with community stakeholders, preservation advocates, and faith leaders throughout the process to ensure that historically significant items are handled appropriately.
Additional information regarding the brick preservation program and artifact transfers will be released as plans are finalized.
