"I feel powerful. I'm making an impact." Dalma Riquelme of New York is the Alzheimer's Impact Movement (AIM) July Advocate of the Month! 📣 Dalma dedicated 14 years to caring for her mother who had vascular dementia. That experience fuels her advocacy to improve early detection and diagnosis.

Dalma has met with state legislators in Albany and with Rep. Ritchie Torres during the AIM Advocacy Forum in Washington, D.C., and at his Bronx district office. Thanks to Dalma and her fellow advocates, Rep. Torres has cosponsored both the Alzheimer’s Screening and Prevention (ASAP) Act and the Accelerating Access to Dementia and Alzheimer’s Provider Training (AADAPT) Act.

Dalma’s mother passed away in 2024 just three days before her first AIM Advocacy Forum, where her team was recognized as Alzheimer’s Congressional Team (ACT) Team of the Year. Her teammates accepted the award and brought it back to New York to share with her. Staying connected to advocacy helped Dalma process her grief.

“Once you get into advocacy, you realize you’re not alone, and there’s this big impact...not only with yourself personally and in your inner circle, but also overall in the state, in the country, there’s so many people going through this battle…There’s such a bigger picture.”
