As we recall with solemnity the events that transpired this date in 2001, along with our eternal gratitude for the sacrifices subsequently made in life and service, we'll use today to offer a reminder that we here, even in idyllic Downeast Maine, need to be ever-vigilant against the threat of human-caused disasters too, specifically acts of terrorism.
Depicted is the image captured early on the morning of September 11th at the Portland Jetport, where Mohamad Atta and Abdulaziz Alomari boarded a commuter flight to Logan Airport prior to boarding, hijacking, and crashing Flight 11. Why they drove from Boston to Portland the previous day, only to fly back to Boston the next morning remains an unanswered mystery of the attacks. We're very fortunate here in Maine that typically our greatest risks are natural occurring weather related events. But terrorism still exists as we all know; we're not immune, even here in Downeast Maine. Please stay vigilant and please remain safe, always and everywhere. Thank you.
