Farewell to a friend and founder

It is with a mixture of profound gratitude and sadness that we announce the passing of Dr. Terry Kinzel, a pillar of the Keweenaw Land Trust and of our community, along with joy in celebrating a life well lived.

It was Terry who first gathered friends at his home in discussions that broadened and led to the formation of the Keweenaw Land Trust.

In these photos, we see snapshots of the joy and passion Terry brought to our community: Standing proudly by the trailhead sign at Churning Rapids—land he and his wife Sue Ellen protected through KLT. Bringing smiles at the HorseTail Scramble. Waiting to award a passionate community member with the Floyd and Martha Kinzel Heart and Hands Award, which Terry established in memory of his parents.

For our full statement on Terry's life and legacy, click the link in the comments below.

Together, let’s commit to carry on Terry's passion and advocacy for a community in which all, wildlife and humans together, can thrive. 💚

October is buckthorn management month at KLT! 🍃

Many of you helped us "high cut" buckthorn in the spring. It was a great start to our buckthorn management, helping reduce the spread of buckthorn over the summer.

This month, we're heading back to a few local favorite nature areas to do a second round of cutting and stump treatments. And we need you! 🫵

Wildland fire skills in action! 🔥 💪 This weekend, the Michigan Technological University Wildland Fire Club helped our “stew crew” clean up trails at Boston Creek Nature Area.

They added a slight switchback to a steep part of the trail to make for an easier ascent, and installed wooden posts to make the trail more visible for your winter snowshoe adventures! Thank you for your work!

Fall is a beautiful time to visit Boston Creek. Have you checked out the new trail? Let us know in the comments!

Last week, the Keweenaw Unitarian Universalist Fellowship organized a hike at KLT's Paavola Wetlands Nature Area, led by Linda Belote, a longtime friend and supporter of KLT.

Linda's late husband, Jim, took care of Paavola Wetlands for many years, serving as an excellent steward of this nature area. Site stewards like Jim develop a special connection to a piece of land over time—and a deep knowledge of what makes it special. Linda has spent many years hiking the trails Jim cared for, so these hikers truly got a unique perspective on Paavola Wetlands. 💚

Interested in volunteering as a site steward? Check the comments to learn more about what it means to be a KLT site steward and opportunities to get involved.
