Interested in joining the Hancock Fire Department?
We'd welcome your service.
Check out these FAQs:
Who we are: The Hancock Fire Department is a group of men and women from all walks of life who volunteer to provide fire fighting and emergency medical services (EMS) for the town of Hancock.
What we do: Members respond to fires, medical emergencies, and car accidents 24/7. Most towns in our area are not staffed to fight a structure fire on their own, and we are no exception, we work with the surrounding towns to assist each other when a call requires more resources than any one town has available. The department provides non-transport medical services, while Peterborough provides ambulance coverage.
How it works: Members carry a pager and can download an app on their phone. When an emergency call comes in, we get “toned out” meaning our pager activates and we receive information about the emergency. Members who are available respond to the station and the appropriate resources are assembled and sent out.
What are the expectations? As a volunteer department, the expectations from our members are much more flexible than a full time department. It is understood that members have families, careers and a life outside of the fire department. It is expected that members who are available will respond to calls and it is understood that members are not available at all times. There is no shift schedule or assigned time on duty. The Department meets Tuesday nights from 7-9pm. Each meeting covers a unique area of training. Our members are expected to make at least 2 of these meetings a month.
I don’t have any experience with emergency services, can I still join? Yes. If you are interested in joining us we will provide all necessary training.
Do I need any certifications? No, we will help you find the best way to use skills from your life to be an asset to the department. If you want to become certified, we will help you through the process.
I am interested but not sure if being in the Fire Department is a good fit. Well, there is only one way to find out! Come to a meeting or training and see how it goes. If it doesn’t work out, there is no pressure to stay on and no hard feelings.
