🚴‍♂️ Ride Safe, Hancock! 🛴⚡

With warmer weather here, we’re seeing more people out enjoying bicycles, scooters, and e-bikes around town—which is great to see. A quick reminder to help keep everyone safe:

👉 Bikes, scooters, and e-bikes are considered vehicles under Maryland law, which means riders are required to follow all traffic laws—just like a car or truck. This includes:

â–  Stopping at stop signs and red lights
â–  Riding in the same direction as traffic
â–  Yielding where required and using proper signals

👉 Lighting & visibility (especially after dark):
If you’re riding at night or in low light, Maryland law requires:

â–  A white front light visible at least 500 feet
â–  A red rear reflector or light

👉 Helmets:
â–  Required for riders under age 16
â–  Strongly recommended for all riders

👉 Local & trail considerations:

Sidewalk and trail use can be regulated by local ordinance, so be aware of posted rules. Bikes, scooters, and e-bikes are prohibited on town sidewalks. Please yield to pedestrians and ride respectfully in shared spaces.

🌳 Safer places to ride in Hancock
While public streets are open to lawful riders, we encourage using:

â–  Local parks
â–  The C&O Canal Towpath and WMRT

These locations provide a safer and more enjoyable experience, especially for families and less-experienced riders.

🌙 After dark tips:

â–  Wear bright or reflective clothing
■ Use lights even if you think you’re visible
■ Slow down and stay alert—visibility drops quickly

🙏 Let’s all do our part to keep Hancock safe and enjoyable for everyone—drivers, pedestrians, and riders alike.
