Please don't burn anything outdoors.

For Saturday, March 28, in Cullman County:
โ€‹Humidity: Will drop to a very dry 27โ€“30% in the afternoon.
โ€‹Wind: Sustained from the North at 10โ€“15 mph, with gusts up to 30 mph possible following Friday night's front.
โ€‹Temperature: Much cooler, with a high near 63ยฐFโ€“67ยฐF.
โ€‹The combination of low humidity and gusty winds creates a high risk for rapid fire spread. Any outdoor burning should be avoided.

How ISO Ratings Work in Alabama โ€” and Why They Matter for Your Insurance Bill

When homeowners receive their property insurance bill, one factor many may not realize impacts the cost is their communityโ€™s ISO rating.

The Insurance Services Office, now known as Verisk (formerly ISO), evaluates fire protection services across the country, including in Alabama. The score, officially called the Public Protection Classification (PPC), plays a significant role in determining property insurance rates.

What Is an ISO Rating?

ISO ratings range from 1 to 10:
โ€ข Class 1: Superior fire protection
โ€ข Class 10: Does not meet minimum standards

Most Alabama communities fall somewhere between Class 3 and Class 7, depending on available resources.

Insurance companies use this rating to assess risk. The better the fire protection system in an area, the lower the risk of major fire loss โ€” and that can translate into lower insurance premiums.

How Are ISO Ratings Determined?

ISO evaluates three main categories:

1. Fire Department (50%)
This includes:
โ€ข Number of firefighters
โ€ข Training and certifications
โ€ข Equipment and apparatus
โ€ข Response times

2. Water Supply (40%)
ISO reviews:
โ€ข Hydrant spacing and maintenance
โ€ข Water pressure and flow
โ€ข Availability of water in rural areas

3. Emergency Communications (10%)
This examines:
โ€ข 911 dispatch capabilities
โ€ข Staffing levels
โ€ข Backup systems

Communities are typically re-evaluated every five to 10 years.

Why It Matters in Alabama

In rural parts of Alabama, ISO ratings can vary significantly from one area to another. Areas without hydrants or with volunteer-only departments may receive higher (worse) classifications.

For homeowners:
โ€ข Moving from a Class 7 to a Class 5 area could mean noticeable insurance savings.
โ€ข A Class 9 or 10 rating can lead to substantially higher premiums.
โ€ข Some insurers may limit coverage options in Class 10 areas.

For local governments, improving an ISO rating often means investing in:
โ€ข Additional firefighters
โ€ข Updated equipment
โ€ข Expanded water infrastructure
โ€ข Enhanced training

Rural vs. City Impact

Cities with full-time fire departments and extensive hydrant systems typically score better than rural communities that rely on tanker trucks and volunteer crews.

However, some Alabama volunteer departments have improved their ratings through grant funding, upgraded training, and better water access.

The Bottom Line

An ISO rating is more than just a number โ€” it reflects how prepared a community is to respond to fires. For homeowners, that number can directly affect what they pay in insurance each year.

Hanceville Fire and Rescue is currently an ISO Class 5x.

As Alabama communities continue to grow and modernize, improving fire protection services remains not only a safety priority but also a financial one for families and businesses alike.

Carbon monoxide is often called the invisible killer because you canโ€™t see it, smell it, or taste it.

If you are without power, take extra precautions when heating your home. Improper use of fuel-burning equipment can cause carbon monoxide to build up quickly.

Make sure carbon monoxide alarms are installed and working, and never use generators, grills, or fuel-burning devices indoors or in garages.

People are dying in preventable fires.
We can โ€” and must โ€” do better.

On December 1st, Alabama was on track to have the lowest home fire fatality year on record, sitting at 63 total deaths statewide.

Just weeks later, December alone claimed 26+ lives, placing it among the deadliest months in the past 15 years.

Most of these deaths occur in homes without working smoke alarms, or where alarms were missing or disabled.

Cold weather, space heaters, cooking, and electrical issues increase risk โ€” but a working smoke alarm cuts the risk of dying in a home fire by nearly half.

If you havenโ€™t checked your smoke alarms recently, do it today.
