Tuesday night’s City Council meeting opened with our monthly award recognitions. We proudly celebrated Citizens of the Month Matt Woodall and BJ Wheeler for their generous donation to the high school band, as well as Heather Wilson, named Employee of the Month. Additionally, Firefighter of the Year Brian Schermerhorn and Police Officer of the Year Kacey Morris were recognized by The Exchange Club.
Prior to the meeting, University of South Carolina researchers presented findings on localized flood resilience in Hanahan. The team highlighted how smart water sensors track real-time data to map extreme weather vulnerability, guiding future infrastructure and flood-mitigation efforts.
Turning to City business, discussion regarding the Real Estate Investigative Committee was brought forward. Due to four council recusals, the item could not be considered for lack of a quorum. Council proceeded with the agenda, approving consent items, receiving a legislative update from Representative Mark Smith detailing $578,750 in state funding for our new splash pad, and sharing a legal update on active litigation regarding Foster Creek Village. Council also passed the first reading of Ordinance 5-2026, amending the budget to support the splash pad, Tanner Trail fencing, and Senior Center equipment.
During the City Administrator’s report, Courtney Soler shared key updates. Construction on the Otranto sand volleyball court is complete, and the Senior Center addition remains on schedule. Bettis Boat Landing work has been pushed to mid-to-late October due to material delays. Phase 3 of Tanner Trail is substantially complete with safety fencing installed, and a ribbon-cutting ceremony is scheduled for September 22 at 3:00 PM at Fire Station #3.
Mark your calendars for Trunk or Treat on October 24 and the Annual Red, White & Blue Fall Festival on November 14. Our next meeting is Tuesday, October 13, at 6:00 PM.
Thank you to everyone who attended and engaged. You can view the full recorded meeting broadcast, including the research presentation, on the City of Hanahan YouTube Channel.
