Today marks the official beginning of the 2026 Atlantic Hurricane Season. While you start your hurricane prep by learning your evacuation zone, creating a storm kit, and staying connected, the Hanahan Fire Department is prepping by focusing on protecting our most vulnerable citizens.

We are updating our emergency registry to protect residents who rely on electrically dependent medical equipment (oxygen, ventilators, dialysis equipment, etc.). If a major storm knocks out power in Hanahan, our team uses this vital registry to prioritize emergency wellness checks and help ensure life-saving equipment keeps running.

Don't wait for the storm to hit. Help us help you.

The Hanahan Fire Department would like to congratulate Engineer Paramedic Brian Schermerhorn and Engineer Paramedic Ian Strait on earning their National Registry Paramedic certification.

This achievement represents a significant commitment of time, discipline, and perseverance. Obtaining National Registry certification is a challenging process that reflects both clinical knowledge and dedication to serving others at the highest level.

Brian and Ian have continued to invest in their growth as providers and firefighters, and this accomplishment strengthens the level of service we are able to provide to our community each day.
Congratulations to both of these members on a job well done.

This EMS Week, we want to recognize the men and women who answer the call every day to provide care, comfort, and lifesaving treatment to our community.

Thank you to our firefighter/EMTs and paramedics for the dedication, professionalism, and compassion you bring to every response.

We also want to thank our partners at Berkeley County Emergency Medical Services - EMS for the teamwork and support they provide alongside us each and every day. Strong partnerships make stronger patient care, and we’re proud to work together in serving our community.

Happy EMS Week to all EMS providers.

Recently, Hanahan Fire Department crews installed 64 smoke alarms in 19 homes throughout our community.

Working smoke alarms save lives by providing early warning in the event of a fire, and we’re proud to help make our residents safer one home at a time.

Thank you to everyone who participated and to our personnel for continuing to serve beyond emergency response through community risk reduction and public safety outreach.

If your home needs smoke alarms, visit www.cityofhanahan.com/fire to learn more about our free smoke alarm program.

SCFC to lift burning ban for all counties Friday: Officials urge vigilance while burning outdoors as drought conditions persist

COLUMBIA—The South Carolina Forestry Commission will lift the State Forester's Burning Ban for all counties, effective at 7 a.m., Friday, May 1.

Agency officials believe the combination of rain, elevated relative humidity, improved overnight recovery and a lack of significant wind in the forecast warrant removing all remaining counties from outdoor burning restrictions.

“Many areas of the state have seen rainfall this week, and higher relative humidity and fuel moisture continue to mitigate significant fire potential,” said SCFC Fire Chief Darryl Jones. “Though we expect even more rain across more of the state in the next week, people who choose to burn outdoors should still exercise vigilance as the rain we have received has not changed the state’s drought status.”
