Just after mile marker 31, Hāna Farms is one of the best places to turn a Road to Hāna stop into an actual meal. Its open-air Bamboo Hale serves farm-to-table island plates using ingredients grown right on the seven-acre farm and sourced from other Hāna-area farms. Think fresh harvest salads packed with tropical greens, smoked pulled pork, locally inspired specials, and plenty of ingredients that haven’t traveled very far to reach your plate.

The roadside market and bakery are worth a stop on their own, especially for the famous banana bread, baked fresh in flavors like original, macadamia nut, chocolate chip and pineapple. And if you’re craving their wood-fired farm pizza, plan accordingly, pizza is currently served on Fridays only, when the Bamboo Hale stays open later and features live music.

It’s fresh, casual, distinctly Hāna, and exactly the kind of meal that fits a day exploring East Maui.

Hidden beneath the rainforest near Hāna, the Hāna Lava Tube, also known as Kaʻeleku Caverns, offers a fascinating look beneath Maui’s surface. The cave was formed when the outside of a lava flow cooled and hardened while molten lava continued moving underneath, eventually leaving behind the massive underground passage visitors can explore.

Normally, the self-guided experience takes roughly 30–45 minutes, with flashlights provided to illuminate unusual lava formations and the cavern’s enormous volcanic walls. Important 2026 update: the Hāna Lava Tube is currently temporarily closed while an archaeological inventory survey is conducted, with no reopening date announced yet. Definitely check its status before adding it to your Road to Hāna itinerary.

Add waterfalls to the list. From a 1,100-foot stunner tucked into a remote valley to gentle “bridal veils” along the roadside, Maui’s lush, remote regions account for a large slice of its magnetism.

Right in the heart of Hāna, Hāna Bay is a great place to take a break after the long drive down Hāna Highway. The protected bay features a broad dark-sand beach and generally calmer water than many of East Maui’s more exposed beaches, making it a popular local spot for swimming, paddling, canoeing and fishing when ocean conditions cooperate.

Hāna Beach Park has picnic pavilions, restrooms, outdoor showers and plenty of space to sit down for lunch while looking across the bay. It’s also an important community gathering place and is closely tied to Hāna’s long outrigger canoe tradition. The park is currently open 7 a.m.–8 p.m. daily.

It may not have the dramatic waterfalls of the drive getting here, but Hāna Bay gives you something different: a chance to actually stop, relax and spend a little time in Hāna rather than simply turning around and heading home.

Located around mile marker 10.5, the Garden of Eden is one of the easiest places along the Road to Hāna to slow down and really take in Maui’s tropical side. The 26-acre botanical garden is home to more than 700 labeled plants, including native Hawaiian species, tropical flowers, palms, rainbow eucalyptus, and a large collection of kī, or ti plants.

Beyond the gardens, you’ll find ocean overlooks, views toward Puohokamoa Falls, picnic areas, peacocks, and a look at Keopuka Rock, famously seen in Jurassic Park. It’s also a convenient early stop for restrooms, a short walk, and some great photos before continuing farther toward Hāna.

Allow anywhere from about 30 minutes to a couple of hours, depending on how much you want to explore.

Hoʻokipa can be thanked for Paia earning the nickname of the “Windsurfing Capital of the World”. Its stretch of white sand, dotted with black rocks, is located at mile marker #8.8 on Hwy 36 between the towns of Paia and Haiku.

The most immediately noticeable feature to the 120-acres that make up Wai'anapanapa State Park is the black sand beach named Pa'iloa.

Wai'anapanapa State Park is famous for it's black sand beach and freshwater caves, but few know the legends that haunt this area of Maui, Hawaii.

If the front side of is all waterfalls and rainforest, the back side is wind, stone, cliffs, and silence. This part of the drive feels older, emptier, and more powerful, with the slopes of Haleakalā on one side and the Pacific stretching endlessly on the other.

It’s not the easy route, and it’s not for every rental car. But for travelers who plan ahead and move slowly, the back road offers something rare, space, stillness, and a view of Maui that feels beautifully untamed.
