Zimbabwe Cultural Centre of Detroit

Zimbabwe Cultural Centre of Detroit Two domestic spaces become the portal to two places in crisis, Zimbabwe and Detroit- initiating collaborations between artists from both spaces.

Zimbabwean Cultural Centre of Detroit (ZCCD) has been founded for and by artists living in Zimbabwe and outside its borders. The organization serves to dismantle naturally occurring as well as constructed boundaries, both physical and otherwise with a view to promote community with the global and local in mind. Working of two domestic spaces that we have re-imaged as cultural consulates, one situa

ted in Detroit, U.S.A. and the other is in Harare, Zimbabwe. Recognizing our role as cultural ambassadors we endeavor to foster a culture of research, dialogue, and production across geographic boundaries of Detroit, Michigan and Zimbabwe. We acknowledge the current situation of economic crisis and a range of social issues that individuals in both these spaces grapple with. Our goal is to encourage strong ties between culture producers and residents in both Zimbabwe and Detroit acting as catalysts for critical artistic production as well as cultural exchange between these two diverse communities. Consular Agents:
Chido Johnson, Detroit
Kumbulani Zamuchiya, Harare, Mutare.

With the generous support of the Gilbert Family Foundation, Sadza Space is proud to offer three fellowships for Detroit-based BIPOC artists participating in DETZIM, a three-week cultural exchange, workshop, and research residency in Zimbabwe. We’re excited to welcome LaKela Brown to the residency this year.
This year’s residency brings together ten studio artists working across a range of mediums. Participants will engage with artist-run spaces throughout Zimbabwe, visit culturally and historically significant sites and arts institutions, and build connections through collaborative learning and exchange. Artists will present their research-in-progress at the National Gallery of Zimbabwe and share their final research and experiences in Detroit in 2027.

Initiated in 2016 by Zimbabwe Cultural Center Detroit, DETZIM is a group-based research residency developed in partnership with institutions including the College for Creative Studies, Chinhoyi University of Technology, and the National Gallery of Zimbabwe School of Visual Art and Design. This marks the second DETZIM residency led solely by Sadza Space, the new home of Zimbabwe Cultural Center Detroit.

Elvin Poskovic is a student at the College for Creative Studies in Detroit who sculpturally loves working with found objects that already are embedded with memory. This urban mining of material that is reconceptualized to hold new meaning is practiced by a number of contemporary artists in Zimbabwe like Moffat Takadiwa, Wallen Mapondera, and Gareth Nyandoro, to name a few. Working in Zimbabwe will be a mark in Elvin’s journey as an artist. Please support his GoFundMe to make this a reality. Visit the profile page for a link.

Itai Moltz is an artist in Detroit who fell in love with stone. In Shona, his first name "Itai" translates into English as "do it." Let's do it! Let us get him to Zimbabwe! Zimbabwe (the house of stone) is where he needs to be immersed in a community of other stone sculptors. Itai passionately lives up to his name as one of the most prolific seniors graduating at CCS. Please support his dream to carve straight from the mountains that the beautiful stones of Zimbabwe comes from among other stone sculptors. Visit his GoFundMe linked on our profile page.

Anyone who is serious about stone sculpture has to work in Zimbabwe. Zimbabwe's name actually means House of Stone. Sofia Bicego is among the few in metro Detroit who have been specializing in stone carving. Aside from her work, she has been assisting our Detroit sculpture community explore stone through a CCS CE course for the past few years now.
As an artist, she has been working in a unique body of work where the residue of her carved stone becomes pigment for its shadowed image. Zimbabwe not only holds a mastery of the process but also is a home for so many different colored stones. This will be a perfect place for her to grow as an artist. Let's help her achieve this opportunity. You can find the link to her GoFundMe on our Instagram profile page.

Omar Galvez is an artist in Detroit studying at CCS who wants to participate in DETZIM 26, which is an intensive three-week artist residency in Zimbabwe. Being Honduran-American, his work has been exploring cultural landscapes that counter dominant Western narratives. The residency in Zimbabwe will not only surround him with artists who share this urgency, but also offer workshops in creating alternative languages to confront them. Please support this Detroit-based artist to make this opportunity real. The link to his GoFundMe is on our profile page.

This Saturday, we will celebrate Zimbabwe's 46 years of independence. While it may be the last country in the alphabet, its connection to Detroit goes back to the Pan African movement in the 1960s and 70s. The Zimbabwe Cultural Center Detroit, located in Sadza Space, is also marking its 13th anniversary. We invite you to join us at Sadza House this Saturday afternoon for the festivities. There will be music by Rahme, a braai courtesy of Mangange, sadza prepared by Chido, greens from Terri, drinks by Precious, a cake from Marie, and a warm welcome from Ana and Nhamo. We hope to see you there!
