To foster, encourage, and amplify the artistic and cultural communities of the City of Hamtramck. Through artistic and cultural initiatives that educate, engage, and unify our diverse community, we aim to create a better quality of life for all Hamtramck residents. Vi

A Hamtramck where all people flourish with universal access to and participation in the arts. We strive to bring our diverse populations a better understanding of each other’s cultures and to work toward our shared goals for a strong community. Values -
Community – To serve as a bridge between the disparate arts and cultural initiatives and organizations in the City to better connect us to each other and our shared goals. Accessibility – We will provide safe, usable, and inclusive spaces for the entire population of Hamtramck; including those with disabilities, and members of racialized communities; regardless of their age, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, religion, nationality, ethnolinguistic, and/or soci-economic status. Aesthetics – Recognition of all art forms and artistic and cultural traditions that enable full and meaningful creative expression. Autonomy with Accountability – Responsible generation and allocation of resources through grant writing and fundraising. Relevance – To strive to offer broad influence and bold leadership. To acknowledge our past, emerging developments, and needs of the future, while serving as a liaison between the arts and businesses, government, schools, and existing cultural institutes. Equity – Acknowledge and address past and present racial injustice, representation, and visibility of all groups. We will encourage impactful programming which will (confront/address) Hamtramck’s racist history and how it affects our present. All members are dedicated to being present and accountable for the work of the Arts and Culture Commission as per the rules of participation.

Director of Arts, Culture, and Entrepreneurship (ACE)

The Director of Arts, Culture and Entrepreneurship (ACE) leads the City’s strategy and planning concerning fine and performing arts, culture, and history, with a strong emphasis on supporting the creative workforce. This role develops and implements strategies that promote business growth, innovation, and startup activity within the arts and cultural sector. It is tasked with engaging the City’s robust artist community to streamline access and operational gaps within City processes, ensure that equitable opportunities are available through program and policy measures, and leads the City’s effort to feature and uplift the arts in the City of Detroit.

In order to ensure lasting impact under the Mayor Sheffield Administration, the ACE Director will also lead the City’s “ACE in All Policies” approach, which mandates that the arts and creative community objectives are integrated in, though not limited to, the City’s health, human services, economic development, planning, Law, youth, senior and faith-based strategies.

The ACE Director also plans, manages, and supervises point-in-time approaches: Diverse, multi-faceted arts programs and services and the planning ex*****on of departmental projects and initiatives.

The position collaborates with artists, stakeholders, investors, and institutions to establish and manage feedback and advisory groups that directly inform the Administration’s policies and executive actions.

The ACE Director is tasked with being a creative community-centered advocate with deep knowledge of City of Detroit department and functions, and Mayor Sheffield Quality of Life Improvement platform knowledge and awareness. Their objective is to blend this expertise to cultivate a vibrant, inclusive and equitable entrepreneurial ecosystem for Detroit’s creative community within the City of Detroit that is informed by stakeholders and buttressed and made sustainable by concrete, well-formed policies.
