Last evening, members of the fire company visited our members who answered their last call. WE fixed up their graves, replaced flags and paid our respects, sadly the list just keeps getting longer.

The County HAZMAT team finished shortly after Noon today. Rt 31 is open in both directions. The device was a nuclear moisture density gauge that uses small sealed radioactive material to test the compaction and density of pavement. One of these devices was run over accidently by a roller, causing the small leak.

This morning Glen Gardner Fire Company No. 1 and our fire company were dispatch to a radioactive device leak on Route 31 at the ice cream stand just south of Main St. There is no cause for alarm.

A roller ran over the device causing a very small amount of radiation to be detected at a distance of 20 feet. This was the measurement of County HAZMAT.

All fire units maintained a distance of more than 150', which is double the suggested safety margin for this type of device/exposure of 75".

Again, no one is at risk in either borough.

Rt 31 will be closed for most of the morning, potentially longer.

Thank you New Jersey State Police and Hunterdon County, NJ - Department of Public Safety HAZMAT teams for the prompt response and guidance.
